About the Author

Tomas Pernecky is with the Faculty of Culture and Society at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. An advocate of post-disciplinary approaches to knowledge, his wide-ranging interests extend to examining a variety of philosophical, conceptual, theoretical and methodological issues. Examples include ontological inquiry into the constitution of social worlds through the phenomenon of events (e.g. Ideological, Social and Cultural Aspects of Events by CABI), sustainability-related concerns (e.g. Events, Society and Sustainability: Critical and Contemporary Approaches by Routledge) and the application of constructionist philosophy and hermeneutic phenomenology in tourism research. Tomas recently co-chaired the second Tourism Postdisciplinary Conference (Copenhagen, 22–24 June�2015) and co-edited a special issue on tourism post-disciplinarity for the journal Tourism Analysis.

Very comprehensive

[[VIDEOID:mo3LJM3H8C0WMJ0]]Someone from the Resources Development Administration (RDA) labs has leaked this confidential report. Not only that, he/she has successfully sold this online (where I bought mine) and at major bookstores! That's one smart, profiteering, mole.

This is the fact book on Pandora, the kind of book issued to soldiers who are about to invade that planet for its precious resources. It has all the information on the ecosystem, resources, flora, fauna and the native population called Na'vi, complete with all their culture and behaviour. There are classified information on the weapon systems used by RDA, including the Avatar project. And everything is accompanied by CG images.

I had some hesitation before buying this survival guide and it's not because I'm afraid that James Cameron might send Avatars to get me. I like art books and books on movie production, this book is neither of those. This is really a visual companion to all the stuff that's shown in the movie. It's for the ultimate fans, those who need to know every little detail, from the ferns on the ground to the mating habits of the Na'vi.

It's an interesting book but recommended more to the hard core fans of the movie.

Excellent comprehensive guide to the world of Avatar.

If you have seen the movie and had and/or developed lots of questions about Pandora, the Navi, Earth's current state (in regards to the film),etc or if you just want everything fleshed out for you, then this book is for you.

It's VERY comprehensive. It's almost as if one has a textbook of everything and anything about Pandora. I love it. To see how much detail has been given to everything (and I literally mean everything) just makes me sit in aw of what James Cameron has created and the world that he (with the help of others) has developed. Everything just comes to life and so much detail is put into everything that Pandora could easily exist.

If you are looking for a book that has some sort of "making of" material in it, then you won't find it here. There is nothing related to making of the movie in the book.

From now on when I watch the movie, I am going to enjoy it a lot more knowing all the specific little details behind the story and Pandora. It just helps me enjoy the masterpiece that is Avatar even more.

Don't hesitate to buy it. There is a narrative to the book at the beginning but then it divides itself up like a textbook (although there is commentary by a specific individual within each section). I think it's great for all ages.

In this worthy sequel to The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Pilkey maintains the original's satiric, self-referential formula as he revisits fourth-grade pranksters Harold and George, along with their school principal and principle nemesis, Mr. Krupp (aka superhero Captain Underpants). Trouble begins when Harold and George sabotage a science fair and are punished with "The Invention Convention Detention." Bored, the boys collaborate on a comic book about Talking Toilets. To their surprise, the Toilets come to life and Mr. Krupp's alter ego is called into service. Worst of all, even the brave Captain Underpants may be no match for the Toilets' leader, "nearly a ton of twisting steel and raging porcelain" known as the TT 2000. Pilkey illustrates in uncomplicated black-and-white line drawings with washes of gray, and offers "Flip-O-RamaTM," which requires turning a page back and forth for low-low-budget animation ("Don't forget to add your own sound-effects!"). He promises "extremely graphic violence" in scenes of "a giant toilet getting its shiny hiney kicked," ridicules teachers named "Ms. Ribble" and "Miss Anthrope" and decides that the story just wouldn't be complete without "upchucking." Bart Simpson could learn a few things from the subversively hilarious Harold and George, who consider inventing a robot urinal ("The Urinator"), then decide, "They'll never let us get away with that in a children's book. Grade 3-6This epic novel opens with an introductory cartoon strip that tells the top-secret truth about how two kids, George and Harold, used the 3-D Hypno-Ring to hypnotize their principal, who now becomes Captain Underpants whenever he hears fingers snaping. In this second adventure, the boys are banned from attending the annual Invention Convention and sent to detention to keep them out of trouble. This, of course, is impossible, so they sneak into the school that evening and tamper with all of the inventions to wreak havoc. They also make copies of their newest comic strip of vicious attack toilets and the daddy monster of them allTurbo Toilet 2000. The copy machine is an invention that duplicates into live matter all images it copies and the attack toilets come to life. The wild story actually comes to a logical conclusion, but it really doesnt matter. The fun is in the reading, which is full of puns, rhymes, and nonsense along with enough revenge and wish fulfillment for every downtrodden fun-seeking kid who never wanted to read a book. The cartoon drawings and the amazing flip-o-rama pages make this book so appealing that youngsters wont notice that their vocabulary is stretching. Hooray for Captain Underpants! Suprisingly funny at every turn. Great for all ages.

My then 9 year old fell in love with these books and had to own every single one of them so he could read them over and over again. Once he finds a series he loves he can’t ever seem to put them down, this was easily one of his favorites.
My youngest who is now 8 is getting into them as well. It takes a lot of to get him interested in a series of books but I love to hear him in his room laughing as he reads through the books.
Dav Pilkey uses his incredibly gifted imagination to write a very entertaining book for all ages. George and Harold's ideas while at first seem innocent enough they end up causing dilemmas that even the amazing Captain Underpants can't resolve. Instead of panicking, George and Harold come up with crazy ideas that surprisingly work and save the day, plus more!

Awesome dad book

Started buying this series for my husband to read to our toddler on his nights to read! My husband was griping that he only had a few books that he would read to our son because of his own preference so we got a captain underpants and haven't looked back! My husband enjoys reading these to our 3 year old son and our son loves daddy's enthusiasm, voices and excitement reading them! Wonderful buy for any dad's looking for books they enjoy reading as well!

Must be very entertaining

My kid loves the Captain Underpants series. Only two problems though:

1) Why does anyone want to read about a cartoon character running around in their underpants?
2) My son reads them so fast we have to order in bulk.

Seriously, my son used to hate reading but read multiple books in the series at a record pace. I wish I had called Guiness Book of World records but who knew? I didn't even think he would finish one without being forced to read. +1 for the wife. Good decision.

Great book for efficiently learning excel

Pros:
Great way to get up to speed quickly
Every chapter comes with spread sheets for quickly duplicating everything in the book
Lots of good review questions at the end of the book
Teaches and reinforces efficient ways of solving practical business problems

Cons:
Incredible amount of typos for a second edition
Kindle version doesn't include an index with page numbers - so its useless

This is the second version of Gottieb's very popular book teaching excel to business and finance professionals. I spent about a week 4-5 hours a day working through this book in conjunction with the downloadable excel files going through it chapter by chapter. It was time well spent and my excel skills improved dramatically.

I found the reviews of the first version of this book to be right on. The author does do a great job of painlessly teaching the information. True power users will likely learn something new but may find some of the information to be too basic.

The biggest problem with the old version is still here. Surprisingly, this updated edition is still filled with lots of typos, errors in spreadsheets and a few incorrect answers which seems to get worse towards the end of the book.

For example, figure 29.7 contains formulas that omit the last row. The screen shot in excel even points this out and includes the warning indicator that the formula is missing adjacent cells - i.e., the missing row. Chapter 29 question #6 option #3 asks the reader to calculate the IRR for a situation with an initial investment of 300,000 to gain 450,000 at the end of year 3. My excel spreadsheet and an online calculator indicates the correct answer to be 14.47% but the book says 7.46%.

I would guess I probably spent an extra 5-6 hours overall from double checking and reviewing stuff due to the errors in the book. For some readers this won't be a big deal. However, for those of us meticulously going through every exercise in the book it does get quite tiresome after awhile.

So why did I give it 4 stars and not a lower score? It really is organized incredibly well and laid out in a way that makes it easy to rework the problems and integrate the most efficient process for solving a range of typical business problems. I had tried other well reviewed books previously but found some of them took too much time and effort trying to figure out what the author was trying to teach and then to learn how to do it in the spreadsheet. As a result, I never got very far using those books.

In this book, the author includes hundreds of well thought out screen shots with arrows and inserted notes pointing out where the reader should be looking, what exactly they should be clicking and how to perform the new skill as effortlessly as possible. Yes, it is more expensive compared to other books teaching similar skills but far less time is wasted learning the new skills.

Other notes:
I used the kindle version on my Nexus 7 and found it typical of most kindle version textbooks. Most of the graphs were easy to read requiring no extra zooming, there are no page numbers in the table of contents but does contain active links and the index is useless containing neither page numbers nor active links.

This book is specifically for Excel versions 2007 and 2010 with extra material for Mac's excel 2011 and excel 2003. I started the book using my old copy of excel 2007. However, once I saw a few cool newer options that wasn't in my version I decided to try excel 2013 via the free trial as this was going to be my one chance to really spend lots of time learning excel so might as well try to be up to date. This worked out very well and the book was still very easy to follow. I'll most likely continue the Office 365 subscription as its clearly better than my old version.

Good for beginers

Gave this to new grads in my office who started working right out of college. The reason I picked this is because the content was basic and did not require any prior knowledge of excel. By the end of going through this book, the person got the hang of excel which was the whole purpose of the exercise.

If you already work with excel, then this book is probably not for you. I will suggest it for beginners. (I work with excel on a daily basis constructing complicated financial models, so my definition of basic might be a bit high, but you can judge the level of this book by using the free previews). Intermediate and advanced users can probably still pick up a few new tricks from this book.

Its everything I expected

As an MBA graduate in a tuff job market, any little advantage helps. Knowing excel is a huge advantage and this book helped me become more comfortable and more efficient with the program. Besides some typos, the book was everything I hoped it would be.

About the Author
Yong Ho received his Ph.D. in anthropology and linguistics, with a specialty in Chinese anthropology and language, from Columbia University. He served as the Director of Language at the China Institute in New York City and has taught Chinese at various institutions in the U.S.

My first HIPPOCRENE Chinese Book

I came to this book with an intermediate level of Mandarin, so I was past all the greetings, numbers, basic conversation as I had used other resources. (Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1, Mastering Conversational Chinese for Beginners and a couple of phrasebooks). With that said, I'm not familiar with how the previous Hippocrene Chinese books were set and how this book builds upon previous knowledge.

What I do know is, this book is extensive, clear, and I enjoy reading the dialogues so far. There is a glossary at the book that has vocabulary from the Beginner's Edition of this Chinese series so that's a big refresher for people coming from the beginner book to this book.

First, this book starts off each chapter with a conversation in characters supplemented only by pinyin followed by a reading passage that is entirely all characters that talks summarizes said-conversation. The audio couldn't have been any clearer and is one of the strongest point of this book. It really helps to hear each conversation and reading passage in a native voice and enjoy just how fluidly it is spoken; not too fast, not too slow. (coming from somebody who doesn't like to hear the standard Beijing style of speech)

The lessons then go into explaining new grammar points introduced in each new lesson then neatly ending with exercises to make sure you did understand the content. The amount of characters you will learn in this book is a little above average. Honestly, I feel this intermediate book should of been MUCH bigger because the format of this book just works sooo well, very organized and rare will be the times where you feel lost.

Clearly, one of the best Chinese books I have the pleasure of learning from and I really hope this format is kept in the Hippocrene Chinese books, I'm ready for an "Advanced" Chinese or a much more expanded Hippocrene Intermediate Chinese book!

This book is for after the training wheels come off and you are ready to make some good progress towards becoming intermediate. Excellent dialog examples, clear teaching of grammar and useful exercises. Also very good explanations of how and when and why Chinese people say something one way versus saying the same thing another way. Well done.

He reviews other philosophical accounts of implementation and computational explanation and defends a notion of representation that is compatible with his mechanistic account and adequate vis � vis the four models discussed earlier. Instead of arguing that there is no computation without representation, he inverts the slogan and shows that there is no representation without computation -- but explains that representation goes beyond purely computational considerations. Milkowski's arguments succeed in vindicating computational explanation in a novel way by relying on mechanistic theory of science and interventionist theory of causation.

Perfect for neuroscience researchers, not for a general audience

This is not a general audience book. It argues nuances of Detailed terminology of the field is used without definition or explanation. He explains what he thinks is wrong with philosophies competing with his own, but never clearly defines his own. That's typical for philosophy, but it doesn't help the general reader.

That said, it's very concise and well written. Some of my peers in a reading group, actively practicing in areas of cognitive neuroscience, thought the book was perfect. I depended more on their explanations than on the book.

I liked the book a lot. It has many good tips and practical information. I have some knowledge of the subject, for beginers I think a little more explanations would be necessary.
There are some classic recipes missing, that I would`ve expected to be in the book
