What Just Happened?

As a die hard Christie fan, and loving the previous four T&T books, I felt I had to slog through and finish this one, and although the whodunnit is answered after a fashion, I still don't know whydunnit. Christie wrote this one as an aged writer and it shows, with the main characters, themselves in their seventies, prattling on about nothing interesting or germane, and "witness" characters sounding like a visit with an aged relative who talks about people you have never met and they can't seem to quite remember. Although in the end we do find out who did the actual dastardly deed(s), it doesn't seem to matter; I won't type out a spoiler here as far as motive, suffice it to say it was very unsatisfying and confusing. Perhaps an English reader would get more out of it as there are references to what I think are actual historical events that happened in England, but I can only guess. If you are a fan of T&T by all means read this one as it is the last, but for all other Christie readers I say skip it.

My Favorite Agatha Christie -- Believe it or not

I was surprised to see how unliked Postern of Fate is rated. It happens to be my favorite Agatha Christie book. I am a great book reader and a long-time aspiring retiree. Walking in the idyllic Diablo neighborhood of Contra Costa County, I listened to Postern of Fate -- where a retired couple retire to a country old house in England, and saw them moving into the type of picturesque neighborhood where I walked. The endless discussion of the lady going through boxes of books and the thrills of her memories of different titles entranced me. I love their dog and their relationship to the dog. I wished this old couple encountered a few more adventures in their scenic village. The earlier books about Tommy and Tuppence didn't interest me as much. You can probably guess that I adored Miss Marple and, as I marched to my daily round of paperwork, I loved to escape to her world of a small village, gardening, walking, knitting, reading and an adventure or two.

Whose voice do they think we want to hear when we sit down to a novel by Agatha Christie? And what will she sound like twenty years from now? It's frightening that her estate has failed to see the importance of guarding her words as she wrote them. Please tell me I'm not the only one here who senses that a crime has been committed.

This is a book that deserves more than 5 stars

A detail and powerful portrait of all people who lived under the oppressive regime of Nazi Germany. The reader of the book will have a deep appreciation for the feelings of hopelessness of the oppressed under an evil and powerful government.

A Time to Live and a Time to Survive

I'm more used to the images and tales of concentration camp victims and exterminations. This story of lost souls forced to drift around the European continent (mostly on foot) in pre-World War II -- people denied passports or any other identification papers -- was a revelation to me.
Anyone interested in what the period between the two World Wars meant to the common German citizen should seriously consider reading this fine novel. I have not found anyone better to describe man's inhumanity to man than Erich Maria Remarque.
Who is to decide who is human detritus? Flotsam, indeed!

While not his best, still worth the read

Flotsam is the first of Remarque's refugee works (followed by Arch of Triumph and Shadows in Paradise). The themes he explored in The Three Comrades are here--the ill heroine, the WWI war veteran, etc. However, here the emphasis is on the absurdities that the nationless must face to survive. The work is interesting from a literary standpoint in that Remarque's writing is maturing, though he does seem to return to the same characters over and over--here, the Steiner figure is similar to Ravic in the Arch of Triumph, who, is similar to the main characters of Heaven Has No Favorites, Night in Lisbon, Shadows In Paradise and The Black Obelisk. Be that as it may, it is always a pleasure to read Remarque's world-weary wisdom of the old soldier.

Rev Robinson (author of this book) has stated both in the book, as well on his website, that he remains open minded and if anyone can offer definite proof that challenges a statement or belief he shared in the book, he will indeed do further research on the matter and consider revising his original opinion.

So I am issuing such a challenge. In this book, the author states Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri’s note was obviously faked. The note basically said יהושוע (Yehoshua) was/is the Messiah. This indeed refers to Jesus Christ (or JC as the author uses in the book).

The challenge is that at least ten of Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri’s disciples (students) have come forward and have public stated (in several videos) that in the last several years of his life Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri did indeed teach that the Messiah is Yehoshua. Rabbi Zev Porat has interviewed and posted videos of these interviews on YouTube as well as his website messiahofisraelministries.org

Seems to me, that having ten students come forward verifying the claim, shows the note was not faked. Will the author of this Book Absolute Truth (or many of his readers) indeed perform further research to verify the claims being made? Is the author as really open minded as he claims?

My Favorite Sales Philosophy Book of All Time

The heart of our economy is selling. And, for decades, sales experts have written wonderful books detailing ways to improve the sales process. Having spent much of the early years of my career on the front lines of selling professional services (high-end consulting) and having taught professionals selling for the last 20 years, I have long been a voracious reader of the latest books on how to improve the selling process. At long last, someone has written the perfect companion to all those wonderful process books - this a beautiful gem on a winning sales philosophy. The perfect companion for all those wonderful process books.

I loved this book! It jumped off the bookshelf and into my arms on Sunday while passing through the Orlando airport. On the ensuing plane ride, I read with delight a book which captures the essence of the philosophy that I have personally seen as the differentiator among professionals selling high-end services (i.e., lawyers, accountants, consultants, and investment bankers). The five "laws" are brilliant, the explanations of the laws are very clear, and the short stories crisply support the point being made.

I thought the Go-Giver, the prequel to this book, was a delightful book. This book takes the concept espoused in that gem and transforms the concept into a comprehensive and implementable sales philosophy. This is the starting point for being successful at selling. Compliment it with your favorite sales process (eg "Consultative Selling," "High Trust Selling," "Integrity Selling," etc.) and you will have the winning combination for times that require every sales person to be at their very best.

If I have one concern about the book, it is that the book will get thought of as being just for "sales people." I share the belief that authors Bob Burg and John David Mann point out that almost all of us are involved with sales, in some dimension of our life. From the President of the United States, to non-profit CEOs, to professionals, to solo-entrepeneurs, we all need to be sell effectively and honorably. This book lays out the guidemap for building the foundation for doing so. Best of all, it does so with five laws that any of us can master.

The best indicator of the depth of my feelings about any book is when I start gifting a book in significant numbers. Not only have I started doing that with this book, but I already have one CEO who has told me that he appreciated my gift, loved the book and is buying copies for his entire sales force and his senior management team. And another CEO is giving copies to each of the lawyers in his firm. Their actions have me convinced this book is going to the top of the charts, and deservedly so.

This my 100th review here on Amazon, where I write reviews only on the best of the best of the many dozens of books that I read each year. Because I only write on the best of the best, my ratings here are generally a 4 or 5 star. This book not only deserves a 5 rating, but also goes down as one of the most important of the 100 top books I have reviewed here. It really is that good! And, that important for a world that needs principled approaches to all the important things in life!!

It's Not Just About Sales

Whether in business or our personal lives, relationships are all about adding value to other peoples' lives. Creating giving relationships is the core of Go Giver's Sell More. Yes, the book guides up to be better sales people. But it's SO MUCH MORE than that. This book guides everyone of us toward a better way to be, as human beings, friends, lovers, partners, associates or strangers who pass on the street.

Go Givers Sell More helps us remember our truth - that giving is the key to all relationships. Giving for the sake of pure joy, for the sake of the giving, without a thought for personal gain - or the popular Win/Win that has us keeping score on our relationships. That universal law is quite simple. We just have a hard time remembering it, much less following it.

Our social training is all about getting ahead, doing for ourselves, giving to receive - keeping track of our family and friends in the balance of giving vs getting. Sure, some of what we're taught in sales (and marketing) is useful. But the core premise is flawed. We're all taught to focus on our product and our goal of selling it. We're taught tactics that take us out of the focus on relationship building for the joy of relationships - and into the 'me, me, me' zone.

Human relationships weave the fabric of all business. Relationships also weave the fabric of life. When we put our relationships and others first, focus on creating value for them and give freely of ourselves - that's when we return to our truth. Enjoyable read with great message

There really isn't anything more I can say about this book that all of the other 5 star reviewers have already stated. However, I did feel the need to share my voice amoungst the other positive reviewers because I truly believe this is a must have book for everyone. Both myself and my husband are in the health care industry and know first hand the importance of valueing each and every patient. We also have two college aged children whom we have also instilled this message. I promote this book as well as the Go-Givers to everyone I meet. I believe that if everyone utilized the basic steps outlined in this book we all would have a more profitable and much more positive existince on this planet. "Give more than you are asked and receive more than you can imagine" is the premise I concluded from this book. It is common sense that we have somehow lost along the way. Let's get it back.

About the Author
Harriet Joseph Ottenheimer, professor emeritus of anthropology at Kansas State University, received a B.A. at Bennington College and a Ph.D. at Tulane University. She has taught linguistic anthropology for over 30 years. Her research interests include music, language, and other creative and performative expressions, particularly in African American and African cultures. In addition to extended periods of field research in New Orleans and the Comoro Islands, Dr. Ottenheimer has traveled and lectured widely throughout many other parts of the world. She has special interests in blues, autobiography, transcription, dictionary construction, fieldwork ethics, and ethnicity. Among her publications are COUSIN JOE: BLUES FROM NEW ORLEANS (with Pleasant "Cousin Joe" Joseph), a blues singer's autobiography; THE HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF THE COMORO ISLANDS (with Martin Ottenheimer), an encyclopedia; MUSIC OF THE COMORO ISLANDS: DOMONI (also with Martin Ottenheimer), in vinyl, cassette, and CD formats; and SHINZWANI-ENGLISH/ENGLISH-SHINZWANI DICTIONARY, a bilingual, bidirectional dictionary. She has taught at the University of New Orleans, at Charles University in Prague (on a visiting Fulbright appointment), and at Kansas State University. At KSU she was the founding director of the interdisciplinary American Ethnic Studies Program, teaching introductory and advanced courses in that program, as well as in cultural and linguistic anthropology. Dr. Ottenheimer has received the Kansas State University President's Award for Distinguished Service to Minority Education, and the Charles Irby Award for Distinguished Service to the National Association for Ethnic Studies. She has served as president of the National Association for Ethnic Studies and the Central States Anthropological Association. She speaks five languages: English, Spanish, French, Russian, and Shinzwani. She is attempting to learn to speak and read Czech.

Incomplete - Do Not Purchase for a Class

The copy of this text has the critical thinking and problem sets removed from it. Cengage has instead left a note stating, that as the publisher, they felt these sections were unimportant to the reader and have omitted them. This is definitely a textbook, not a very good textbook, and the work sections removed make this a WORTHLESS textbook. Instead Cengage offers an electronic rental from their website in which they offer the complete book. If this is for a class, and you are expected to work from this book, DO NOT RENT and DO NOT BUY the kindle version.

If you like to study languages...

If you like to study languages like me (I have taught myself how to speak Mandarin and Korean on a fluent conversational level) then you'll love this book. Its incredibly informative in that what you need to learn about languages is finally put down into words that are easy to understand and apply. As a language tutor, I found that reading this book helped me to explain concepts easier. Especially when it comes to teaching your student how to look at every language like a new beginning and stop bringing the grammatical baggage that English native speakers always bring to learning new languages. This book is clear and concise and you will learn a lot about your native language as well as your second, third, and (if you are awesome) fourth language as well as give you the tools to pursue another language. :D

Well I was glad that I did

I needed this book for school and decided to try out the Kindle Edition. Well I was glad that I did! Cutting and pasting for my notes, highlighting and book marking really made it very convenient. Plus it was directly on my tablet versus a book that I would later have to worry about storing or selling. The content of the book was excellent and I loved reading the stories that the author includes. It helps to tie the content together into real life events to get a better understanding of the subject. I highly recommend this book for it's content, but especially in the Kindle Edition format.

Just loved it

I have come to just love Ms. Mitchell's work (her characters are always so wonderfully funny / brave / REAL for me) and I knew I would enjoy this book even though I wasn't so sure about the plot, just based upon the Amazon blurb. Normally, I really enjoy the thrill of reading about characters meeting for the first time, of recognizing that flare of attraction, of seeing characters realize they care for each other deeply. So I actually wasn't sure about a story where all of that has already happened before we get on the scene.

And in fact, when Not Knowing Jack starts, Tony and Jack are already a couple, living together, lives intertwined. They say "love you" in that casual way during sex that shows affection, but leaves each doubting the actual depth of their relationship. They have a good life together of work, friends, a stylish home. And all of that begins to fray around the edges when Jack starts acting...a little odd. Tony's wild imagination immediately conjures up the worst and their relationship takes some rocky turns as unrest and distrust creeps in.

But it's only when Tony learns the truth that it all explodes. Because Jack has been hiding things - a lot of things; big things. Like, that he was once married. And his wife turned out to be crazy. And...well, the rest would be spoilers!

Much of the story is told from Tony's point of view, and I just loved Tony. He's smart, funny, brave, entirely realistic about his own flaws, and just the sweetest guy. He says those snarky things that we all think but are too polite to speak out loud. He's a believable, well-rounded character, the kind you'd love to just hang out with. And we get to see him grow and come into his own during the course of events.

Jack is a great character too; generous, kind, earnest. He made mistakes in the past, and they torment him. So he tries to shut them away and move on like they never happened...only now, they've come back to bite him!

Jack and Tony are friends with the main characters from Regularly Scheduled Life, so you get to revisit Sean and Kyle some six months or so after the events in that book.

And did I mention the really hot sex? See, the good part about established characters is that they already know how to push each other's buttons! Ms. Mitchell always does a fabulous job of making the sex scenes SEXY and believable, and emotionally fulfilling. There's never those unfortunate word choices that ruin the mood, or the "creative" positions that just leave you wondering how uncomfortable that would really be.

Not Knowing Jack is sweet, and funny, and a wonderful, inspiring love story. I hated seeing Jack and Tony struggle, but I loved seeing them strive and succeed. This is about real life, and real relationships, and being brave enough to make it work.

Not quite knowing what to make of it

I like K A Mitchell and have read several of her books. She writes well, and I enjoy her books, but I had a problem with this one.

Spoilers... you were warned....

I found Jack's actions unacceptable. I can understand, a little, why he was so freaked, but as parent, I cannot accept his total dereliction of duty towards his fragile children. The fact that he thought his in laws (the ones who raised his crazy wife!) were taking care of it all was no excuse. I would have given them a bit of time and then written to them daily. I would not have left them alone for the 3 years. I just wouldn't. And so I found it hard to like him. I liked Tony plenty, and found him a real sweetie, and he made the book bearable for me, but Jack just didn't add up for me.

VERY good, characters, plot, even nicely includes kids !!

At first I was concerned since the author is not male. WOW does she know men, their bodies, and sexual activities! The plot had some nice twists, but just decent and I felt all too abreviated conversations. I'd like to have more in-depth conversations, and more 'back-thought commentary' on what characters were thinking. I've not read many M-M romances/sex books that include two men nicely raising kids. I hope to read a sequel about the joys and challenges of raising kids, quasi-small town life, and how 2 sexually active men incorporate sex into their family life; perhaps how the couple handle coming of age of the kids? I'm sure such a book could be developed, especially since there is some breadth of background characters in this one. Now, can someone suggest a similar book? Nice job.
