Great detailed account of the 32nd Infantry Division

My Grandfather served in the 127th Infantry Regiment in the 32nd Division during World War II and just recently passed away. He fought the Japanese in the battle for Luzon, in the Philippines. This book has excellent pictures, personnel rosters of the units and detailed accounts and maps of the actions and battles that the 32nd Division took part in during the War in the Pacific. This book portrays the intense combat and human struggle that those American heroes of the 32nd Division went through in the battle against tyranny. This book also serves as a detailed historical reminder to future generations of the great sacrifices that took place to protect our freedoms. I highly recommend this book to History and World War II buffs.

Great WW 2 US divisional history

Summary: A reprint of this American unit history. Originally published by the State of Wisconsin, this history traces the " RED ARROW " division from its activation in 1940 through combat in the SW Pacific , incl, New Guinea, Biak and the Philippine campaign. The 32d Infantry Division arrived in Australia 14 May 1942. The first element of the division to enter the combat zone by air for Port Moresby 16 September to be joined by other elements arriving by sea 28 September and by air 2 October. Units of the 32d were deployed defensively along the Goldie River on the left flank of the Australian garrison force for the Port Moresby area. Fighting along the Goldie River to protect the Australian left flank, the 32d drove the enemy back along the Kokoda Trail and stopped the enemy threat to Port Moresby. Elements were flown to the Buna area where they were joined, 15 November 1942, by the 2d Bn. of the 126th Infantry which had trekked over the Owen Stanley Mountains. The difficult struggle for Buna-Sanananda was completed, 22 January 1943, and the 32d returned to Australia for rest and training. On 2 January 1944, elements landed at Saidor, and helped to end enemy resistance, 14 April 1944. On 23 April, elements took part in the landing at Aitape, the Division arriving on 3 May. After meeting slight initial resistance, the 32d had to withstand savage counterattacks in the Drinumor River area. By 31 August Aitape was secured and the Division rested. Elements landed on Morotai on 15 September. The 32d CP opened at Hollandia, 1 October to stage for the Philippines. It landed on Leyte, 14 November, and went into action along the Pinamopoan-Ormoc highway, taking Limon and smashing the Yamashi ta line by bitter hand-to-hand combat. Union with elements of 1st Cavalry Division in the vicinity of Lonoy, 22 December, marked the collapse of enemy resistance in the upper Ormoc Valley. From Leyte the Division moved to Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, 27 January 1945. It pushed up the Villa Verde Trail, 30 January, and after more than 100 days of fighting took Imugan and met the 25th Infantry Division near Santa Fe, 28 May, securing Balete Pass, the gateway to the Cagayan Valley. While elements continued mopping-up activities near Imugan, other units moved to rest and rehabilitation centers. Active elements secured the Baguio area, wiped out enemy groups in the Agno River Valley area, and opened Highway 11 as a supply route. Operations ceased on 15 August 1945 and the Division moved to Japan for occupation duty 20 October. 2000 r/p ed, 6 x 9, hard bound , no dj as issued, 416 pages, 159 photos/drawings and 29 maps.

Exellent book about the division with rosters of soldiers included

This book provides an excellent overview of how this division was structured; its units and campaigns and rosters of Michigan and Wisconsin soldiers that made up its ranks.

Contains great photos and maps and is good reading if you have an interest in the 32nd Division.

The downside is that the prices asked for both used and new copies of this book by this company and its affiliates, and others, are ludicrous. It would be interesting to know what sets these exorbitant prices, however, this idiot paid them to get the book! A note to book suppliers is that there is an interesting concept that if prices were lower there there may be a greater turnover and if not, you haven't lost anything.

Spot and solve pupils' maths problems with More Trouble with Maths, the follow-up book to The Trouble with Maths.

What are they?

The books are written by the author, researcher and former teacher Steve Chinn. They are guides to identifying and diagnosing mathematical difficulties, including dyscalculia and mathematical anxiety, and offer practical advice for helping learners with numeracy difficulties.

Are they any good?

The issue I always have with academic research, no matter how credible its findings, is that the recommendations are very rarely accompanied by practical resources and ideas that will make an immediate difference in the classroom. I am delighted to say that these two books do exactly that.

In More Trouble with Maths, Chinn provides research evidence and tests to photocopy for identifying crucial mathematical difficulties that are prevalent in schools. Amid the coverage on conditions such as dyscalculia, there are also fascinating sections about learners' struggles with estimation and the crucial impact on short-term memory.

All these research findings are complemented nicely by The Trouble with Maths, where the focus is very much on practical solutions and strategies. My favourite part is the final section on fractions - a notoriously problematic topic for many pupils. The author pulls apart common approaches to teaching fractions, explaining clearly the misconceptions and difficulties to which they may lead. He then offers an alternative approach, including addressing multiplying fractions through paper folding.

I found these two books fascinating reading, but more importantly I know that they will have a long-term, positive effect on my teaching and my understanding of the difficulties many learners face with mathematics.

About the Author

Marjorie J. Kostelnik is dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. A former child-care, Head Start, and preschool teacher, as well as elementary school specialist, Dr. Kostelnik has been actively involved in helping educators in early childhood programs explore the implications of developmentally appropriate practices. Her work has taken her to many settings throughout the United States and abroad. Marjorie teaches classes in early childhood inclusive education and is currently on the Coordinating Commission for High Quality Early Childhood Education for the state of Nebraska.

Anne K. Soderman had 14 years of classroom experience working with children in both public and nonpublic educational settings prior to joining Michigan State University in 1979, where she is now professor emeritus. In addition to continuing to consult with schools in international settings, she is currently carrying out an administrative assignment and conducting research on second-language acquisition in Beijing, China. Soderman is also co-author of Guiding Children’s Social Development and Learning, 6th ed. (2009), Creating Literacy-Rich Preschools and Kindergartens (2008), and Scaffolding Emergent Literacy (2005).

Alice Phipps Whiren is a professor emeritus of the Department of Family and Child Ecology, Michigan State University. She taught curriculum in early childhood and child development to undergraduate and graduate students and was supervisor of the Child Development Laboratories. Early in her career, she taught young children in an inner-city public school in Michigan. She also served as a Head Start assistant director and has provided a variety of training sessions for preprimary teachers nationally and internationally.

Michelle Rupiper is an associate professor of practice and serves as the director of the Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL). Having received her doctorate in special education from Teachers College at UNL, Michelle has 25 years of experience working with children and families in a variety of early childhood programs. She is the past president of the Midwest Association for the Education of Young Children and the Nebraska Association for the Education of Young Children. Michelle also consults with early childhood programs across the state of Nebraska.

Another stunner from Insight Guides

As with all Insight Guides, the photography in this book is really enticing. Zenfell did a great job of finding areas off the beaten path, as well as all the "must see" treasures in the western U.S. I used this book along with Insight Guide: On the Road (another stunner, also edited by Zenfell) for several trips and was really grateful to have found them.

The best soft tissue resource for pathologists

This is "the" source for soft tissue tumors for residents and staff alike. The descriptions are concise, and the organization of chapters is good. This book is well-written and never dry (well...it's as un-dry as a medical textbook on tumors can be). This is an outstanding source for soft tissue neoplasms. I recommend this book highly. I read certain parts of it for my Pathology boards, which I passed, and give partial credit to this book for my success. This book is really good. However, if you're on a budget, you should definitely consider the WHO Soft Tissue book. It's got the same material but is a LOT cheaper. You will not miss out on anything if you get the WHO book. At some point, though, when your budget loosens up, you need to get this book.

Excellent book in surgical pathology

This book, although apparently volimnous, represents the first book to be read as the first step on the journey of surgical pathology. It does illustrate some important issue with regard the basic facts within the surgical pathology realm. The reader will find that the majority of this book is in the form of excellent illustrating photographs (as must be in all surgical pathology textbooks) to the extent you will be somehow familiar with these tumors. The differential diagnosis section at each entity makes the reader to feel exactly as if in soft tissue pathology seminar. You will get more experience in examining any case even outside the field of soft tissue taking into account the patient age, tumor location, tumor edge, the histopathologic clues, and of course interpretation of immunohistochemical results. You will learn more about the value of electron microscopy with great ease even if you don't care about it.

Fantastic resource for soft tissue pathology for residents

This book is very well-organized and the index is great. Although the size of the book is somewhat daunting - the quality of the photos and the many examples shown for each entity is phenomenal. In my mind, this book is really a soft tissue atlas with abundant text. The text is concise, but thorough and doesn't put you to sleep. I like this book better than the WHO book simply because each entity has numerous examples showing the various permutations and the pictures are color and half-page in size. Shop around, I found this book brand new for nearly half the price!
