Your "Prescription" for an introduction to Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Nutrition

So many people are confused about what to eat, what not to eat, and why or why not.

As a cardiologist (with a master's degree in physiology of exercise), I have had to tip-toe through the mine-field of nutrition publications to help myself, before I could help my patients. I started to gain weight while doing triatholons and following a Mediterranean Diet. Then I decided to follow the same diet I recommended to heart attack victims, I followed and failed a rigorous low fat diet. I was worse, gained weight!

I realized then that my patients were not lying to me when they continued to get worse: more weight, higher BP, worse cholesterol and triglycerides DESPITE my recommendations. They told me they followed my dietary and exercise instructions and continued to gain weight, despite a dietary regimen of only breathing air and drinking water.

I was desperate. I was the Cardiologist who was becoming obese with metabolic syndrome. How could I be a reliable, credible teacher for my patients when I couldn't cure my own "disease"?

Yes, I crossed the forbidden line for cardiologists. I "went Low Carb".

I learned about the science, metabolism, and applied biochemistry of low carbohydrate nutrition from Eric Westman MD and his colleagues. I took a course involving hours of tutorials and reviews of hundreds of scientific papers. I was convinced that there was scientific merit. I became my own guinea pig.

It worked on myself. Weight came down, BP came down, Triglycerides went down and HDL went up. All as predicted. Now I offer this to my patients with confidence, and following a 60 pound weight loss, I feel better about myself and about what my patients can achieve.

This manual is the essence. I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to follow this regimen become very familiar with the contents, and bring the manual to their health care provider. If there are any medical conditions present, as there usually are, then this regimen should be done under the supervision of a health care provider who is familiar with Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic nutrition. If your health care provider is willing to go along with you, but has not had experience with a ketogenic diet bring a copy of this manual along with a copy of the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" as a gift. You, and your health care provider, will be happy that you did.

The Simple, Straightforward, Low Carb Plan that Works

This manual is a simple and effective low carb diet program; the same one used at the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic. With it, I lost 55 pounds in 16 months and continue to maintain that loss without hunger, calorie counting or extensive exercise. Even better, shortly after starting the No Sugar, No Starch Diet; moderate arthritis, other joint pains, skin rashes, and blood sugar issues disappeared. At 62, I am active, energetic and enjoy vibrant good health.
It is not a long book with four diet phases or net carb formulas, but rather, the strict 20g total carb ketogenic diet that works for weight loss and diabetes control. It has simple rules and a list of allowed foods in a little booklet format to carry with you. If you have seen Dr. Westman's YouTube video of his Clinic Introduction Class, this is the short manual you should have to go with it.

Dr Westman's plan for low-carb living works!!!

I started with Dr Westman's "Low Carbohydrate, Ketogenic Diet" on November 5, 2009...using the information found in Dr. Westman's booklet. By May of 2012 (a little over 2.5 years later), I had lost right at 185 lbs, (a weight loss that I maintain to this day...almost 4 years after adopting my low-carb ("no sugar, no starch" lifestyle). For anyone thinking that it's too good to be true, or that low-carbing is not "sustainable"...please click on "my story" (complete with before and after photos at the link here... [...]

Dr. Westman's "No Sugar, No Startch" approach to living is simple, straightforward, deliciously sustainable, and saving lives every single day...this little book and most importantly, Dr. Westman and the science behind this approach, absolutely saved mine. (My "before/after" photos attest to that, if you need proof :-). Thank you always, Dr. Westman!!!

About the Author
Eric Lane and Nina Shengold have been editing contemporary theater anthologies for more than twenty years. Eric Lane's award-winning plays have been published and performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China. Plays include Ride, Times of War, Heart of the City, Dancing on Checkers' Grave, and Filming O'Keeffe. Floating, a PlayPenn finalist, was workshopped at Raven Theatre. Eric's short plays are published in Best American Short Plays, Poems and Plays, and the Foreign Language Press (Beijing). He wrote and produced the short films First Breath and Cater-Waiter, which he also directed; both films screened in more than forty cities worldwide. For TV's Ryan's Hope he received a Writers Guild Award. Honors include the Berrilla Kerr Playwriting Award, the La MaMa Playwright Award, and fellowships at Yaddo, VCCA, and St. James Cavalier in Malta. Eric is an honors graduate of Brown University, and artistic director of Orange Thoughts, a not-for-profit theater and film company in New York City.

Nina Shengold's plays include Finger Foods, War at Home, Homesteaders, and Romeo/Juliet, and have been produced around the world. Her one-act No Shoulder was filmed by director Suzi Yoonessi, with Melissa Leo and Samantha Sloyan. Nina won a Writers Guild Award for her teleplay Labor of Love, starring Marcia Gay Harden; other teleplays include Blind Spot, with Joanne Woodward and Laura Linney, and Unwed Father. Her books include the novel Clearcut; River of Words: Portraits of Hudson Valley Writers (with photographer Jennifer May), and a growing posse of pseudonymous books for young readers. A graduate of Wesleyan, she is currently teaching creative writing at Manhattanville College. Nina lives in New York's Hudson Valley, where she has been books editor of Chronogram magazine since 2004.

Superb Collection of Short Plays

This is a great read for anyone interested in playwriting. Published in 1997 with plays written by now famous playwrights including Christopher Durang, John Augustine, Tony Kushner, David Mamet, David Ives, John Guare, August Wilson and more, lends insight into how they may have begun their careers. There are some playwrights in this book unknown to me whose works are also wonderful and inspiring.

Protect Ya Throne!

Prison Throne is not your typical love story- boy meets girl, they fall in love, get married, have kids & live happily ever after. No, no, no. Random meets Snow, relationship starts off awkward & things go haywire from there. What is consistent though is Snow loves her man. It reminds me of the saying ' even on the chessboard, the Queen protects her King'. And she does it quite well. PRISON THRONE is a love story that real people can relate. The message that I took from this one is anything worth having is worth fighting for.

Once again T Styles impressed me with her word play & how she takes such honor in her craft. I learned plenty of new words in this book & even learned about a different ethnicity. Kudos Mama T! Keep the bangers coming, & I will continue to support

I absolutely loved this book!!! One of the best books I've read so far! From the very first page this book grabs you and takes you on a ride of your life! Yes I gave it five stars and if I could I'd give it more! Prison Throne comes from the twisted mind of T. Styles! So you know this is not your typical love story! This is a book you can't predict, with twists and turns, and a ending you never seen coming! T. Styles has never been known to disappoint so order yours now!!!

This woman is amazing!!! With each book she grows an grows..this was real life love the ups and downs of true love,the trails to see if true love will stand..everything that make you want to give up but your hurt won't....the love between snow n rasim is true...and mute candy love her to death...a fantastic read by an OUTSTANDING author you will not be disappointed....

I LOVE Allie's recipes!

I have been reading Allie's blog The Sprouting Seed (http://thesproutingseed.com) for awhile and LOVE all of the recipes that Allie posts. Several have become staples that I make weekly. As a new mom with a baby on the way I certainly need easy nourishing meals and always feel Crockpot meals make dinner less work, time, and energy. Plus they provide LOTS of leftovers to last us through the week. I really can't wait to put this cookbook to good use and try all of these great looking recipes!

The Ideal Texas Primer

For a relative newcomer-resident like me, this book is the ideal Texas primer. Parker is at once an elegant narrative writer and a probing analyst who uses affecting personal anecdote to rivet a strong sense of place even as he shrewdly slides into place the game pieces that will determine the future of America’s most storied state and one of its leading political and economic pivots. “The culture of Texas seems a hard thing to stamp out of existence, even as it changes,” Parker writes—and indeed it’s the author’s ability to limn that change that makes “Lone Star Nation” such a fascinating read.

It's not the old cow town anymore.

The author begins his story in the late 80’s; a college student with few job prospects in San Antonio, he drives east, then north. In 2000, he comes back, and it’s booming. Parker illustrates the story of Texas as having internal as well as out-of-state migrations, both in the 80’s, when he left, and present day, when people are moving in. Texas has always attracted migrants, for cattle, oil, and agriculture. Even by the 1970’s, Texas had great cities, like Dallas, which housed Fortune 500 companies. Yet even with the wealthy cities, the state’s record on education, crime, health, and race relations were lousy. He blames it in part on the migrations.

Parker writes that in the 1980’s, former rust belters came to Texas, and strengthened the GOP’s position. Fast forward to 2015 however, and the famous Republican hold on Texas is fading. The new Texans are young, better educated, entrepreneurial, and often non-white, and they’re less dependent on oil, cattle, and agriculture. There are fewer Fortune 500 jobs, but lots of little ones. Not surprising, given that CD stores have closed, Blockbuster is finished, Circuit City and Best Buy have downsized.

One change that the writer explores is how the state’s attitude towards Gay Americans has changed. Houston, for instance, elected Annise Parker as its mayor, and I guarantee that 20 years ago this would not have happened. The first things she dealt with were typical city problems; clearing ditches, unblocking sewers, and though she can’t take credit for the building boom, nobody want to do business in a city that’s filthy. She even proposed a law banning discrimination against gays and lesbians in the workplace. Her following among women voters, gay voters, and minorities is powerful.

Texas has always had a dependence on large-scale business, like agriculture and oil, to sustain its economy. The problem was that the these industries were somewhat anti-technology, and it’s not surprising, given that solar and wind power would’ve cut into big oil’s market. The 2013 drought hit the agricultural sector hard, and the farmers, certain that they were fool-proof, had no water-savvy irrigation technology that the Israelis use. Corn fields withered, cattle died, deer had to eat oleander leaves to survive and it killed them off, and coyotes were so desperate that they started killing and eating cats. Conservative Texans in the George Bush mold were not into technology and innovation, and they ended up losing.
Parker is not, however, without his criticism of the new Texas. In order not to raise taxes, Texas raised tuition rates for state and local colleges (up to $50,000) which makes it harder for lower-income students, often minorities. There are ways to alleviate the problem, however; tuition can be lowered for majors that the state needs, like nursing, physical therapy, early child education, and criminal justice.

I always imagined Texas the way I saw it on Dallas; a state full of gruff, loud, conservative businessmen, dead set against any kind of change. The state’s death row would be working overtime, executing multiple convicts daily, and the schools, when not paddling the kids, would be checking to make sure nobody was teaching evolution. The change, however, has arrived, not by force, but through the “old guard” dying out.

Call it “intelligent design,” I suppose.

Interesting and Insightful

A must read for students of Texas culture, politics, or history; or anyone interested in learning more about what America will become.

I'm a former resident of the Lone Star state, and frequent visitor who tries to keep up with its traditions and changes. Mr. Parker very much "gets it" when it comes to Texas. He has written a fascinating book that puts in crisp, and concise words the changes rapidly happening across Texas, and how they will in turn change America.

Having recently finished reading Fehrenbach's classic "Lone Star" about the history of the state, I find Parker's view of the "new Texas" to be as important as Fehrenbach's telling of its past. I don't know if this book will be come a classic, but I'm confident that Parker is on the right track.
