About the Author

Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University’s online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. About the Author
Dr. Kenzo Kase was born in Japan in the early 1940s. He was a sickly child, not allowed to attend physical education classes because of this physical frailty. His education is in chiropractic and acupuncture, but his medical knowledge is both deeper and broader. In the research field, he works with surgeons, physiotherapists and natural healers. Part of his genius is his ability to make connections between different treatment paradigms and to help each concept progress a step or two further. Today people call it Integrative Medicine, but Dr. Kase has been using this approach for years. He has seen that there is no one-size-fits all. In essence, integrative medicine is the embodiment of alternative and evidence based medicine; a school of thought that does not distinguish between the two. Instead it focuses on wellness, health, and prevention through education and an emphasis on the patient-physician relationship; as well as the treatment of the patient s mental, emotional, and physical ailments as a whole. All these considerations are equally strong in animal care. About the Author
Robert Dueck received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and worked for several years as a design engineer at Motorola Canada in Toronto. He began teaching in 1986, specializing in digital and microcomputer subjects in the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs at Seneca College in Toronto. His first book, Fundamentals of Digital Electronics, was published in 1994, and he has written several additional textbooks. He now teaches digital electronics and related courses at Red River College in Winnipeg. Mr. Dueck is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He served as chair of the Winnipeg Section of IEEE in 2002 and was branch counselor of the Red River College Student Branch from 1997-2006.

This book rules!!!

This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen. I do not know of another digital book like it.
It also includes Altera's MAX Plus II software on CD in back of the book along with design files for use with the book prepared by the author.

Good for beginners

This is a good book for beginners to digital logic and VHDL. It spends a lot of time explaining how different components like encoders, decoders, muxes, state machines, etc work. That's good for people who haven't been exposed to the material before. If you want to learn that stuff and apply it in VHDL, it's a great book. If you're just trying to learn one or another aspect, there are probably better books out there. If you want to learn VHDL from the book and already know a fair amount about digital logic, it's tough because you keep on skipping stuff you already know and and then later find out that there was VHDL information buried in that section on seven-segment displays. Similarly, people just trying to learn digital logic who are uninterested in VHDL will probably find that they spend a lot of time skipping past explanation of VHDL. Add in the fact that lots of space is taken up by screenshots of Altera software, and the book ends up containing surprisingly little information for its size. People who want a thorough discussion of digital logic or VHDL should look elsewhere. Beginners will probably be right at home.

Great CPLD book with practical examples

The teaching of digital electronics using CPLD is very useful, the book covers theory, truth table, gate level implementation. The examples show you how to create a module, for instance,a multiplexer.It doesnt only end here, it further demonstrate the application of the multiplexer. From there, you can have better understanding from gate level up to system level. I benefit a lot from this approach. The examples are very useful despite I am not writing in VHDL.

The book also explain the internal architecture of CPLD, starting from the history development of programmable logic devices. If you want to learn on CPLD, this is definitely the book for you, even if you are not using VHDL.

About the Author
J.N. Jim Whiddon, who has spent much of his career in the financial services industry, has owned and operated his own companies for more than thirty years. He hosted his own radio show for five years, including a stint with CNN Headline News in Dallas. He also has been often interviewed and quoted by national media outlets such as Fortune magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and CNBC. Whiddon founded The Old School in 2014 with a mission of conveying timeless tools of interpersonal communication and wisdom to make life-long leaders among students, professionals, and mentors alike. With this goal in mind, he wrote The Old School Advantage, which is his fourth book. He prepared for it by reading more than four hundred other books for the purpose of research. He earned his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and a master of science from The American College in Philadelphia. In a day when the catchword "progressive" seems to imply improvement of antiquated ways of doing things, Jim Whiddon's book brings a breath of fresh awareness of the reliability of "timeless" truths. Whether we talk of Progressive Insurance or progressive politics in view, there's nothing new under the sun. This book demonstrates that old school principles are not worn out, old fashioned disposable views. Those principles that are timeless are reliable threads of wisdom that we do well to embrace and incorporate into our lifestyles and world view. This book is enjoyable to read, stimulating to discuss, and gratifying to put into practice. Buy it, read it, discuss it and apply it. You'll be glad you did.

fun with a focus on problem solving

This is a terrific game for kids and adults.
My daughter discovered this game through a friend of hers. She instantly took to it and began asking me how to spell more difficult words. (She's 6). I sat with her and realized this was something far more than a "game". This a problem solving at it's most fun! "Maxwell" (or any other aviator you choose), finds himself in many situations where he requires you to type in what YOU think will help him solve each problem. YOU type in what you think will help and whatever you type immediately appears on the screen. You can be as creative, silly or matter of fact as you'd like and STILL find ways to solve each puzzle to progress to higher levels. Cute animation and even suggestions for mispelled words to help kids if they play independently. I LOVE the outbursts of pure laughter from my girl....and that makes me want to go over and play with her. Great fun for all!!

Gotta love Scribblenauts - got the DS (Super Scribblenauts) and 3DS game (Scribblenauts Unlimited) from the series, and they are both amazing.

Level design is elegantly simple, but puzzles can be seriously tricky to solve - and that's where the fun is at. There is no wrong way to solve the game's puzzles; you can solve in very straight-forward ways with things like axes and ladders, if you want to. But the game allows you to be extremely creative - you can make everything from a spatula, to a huge gentle vegan t-rex, to a time machine.

So go ride that (whatever you can think of) to geeky, word-smithing, puzzle-solving victory.

Ian Barbour's many books may well be the best in print of writings on the relations of Science, Philosophy, and Religion! This small volume focuses on a central area in all his books: How do religious myths, scientific models, and metaphysical paradigms convey objective truths about the real world? God did not literally create the world in a week once upon a time; our little "Big Bang" was not actually the origin of Everything; there never was a time when there was no time! Beyond religious and scientistic fundamentalisms [inflated supernaturalism and mechanistic, materialist reductionism] lies Barbour's careful analysis of the various complex ways our language conveys meanings and truths, at many levels.

These insights are incorporated into his comprehensive RELIGION AND SCIENCE: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ISSUES, 1997 [Gifford Lectures], and the smaller compact WHEN SCIENCE MEETS RELIGION: ENEMIES, STRANGERS, OR PARTNERS? 2000.

Science and religion aren't so far apart...

This is a very interesting and insightful comparison of how the organizing and research methods of science apply equally well to religion and the ways in which both can be analyzed using similar methodology. Both science and religion seek empirical results from theoretical questions, relying on faith in the systemic process (science on unqualified induction; religion on experiential practice) to reach their goals.
I read this as a resource for a college course in the Philosophy of Science and was profoundly moved by the philosophical similarities of scientific and religious thought and pursuit. I agree with the author that the differences between science and religion are not as great as advertised, but are fewer and less meaningful than scientific atheists would assert.
I highly recommend this for people who aren't sure how to perceive the science vs. religion discussion.

Very helpful for pipe organ builders

I purchased an old pipe organ built in 1922. It was completely disassembled and I didn't fully understand all the parts/pieces. I purchased several pipe organ books and Mr. Shannon's book was the best single-source for answering all my questions. It was informative, easy to read, and contained all the necessary drawings to understand functionality and use of the various components. I feel confident that I can now assemble and bring this beautiful organ back to life.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend after a tour of an historic organ in Rochester, NY, made me appreciate how beautifully complex the instrument is and how little I really knew about it. The gift was very well received, and I'll buy a second copy for myself. If you want to get some feeling for the origins of all of those magnificent sounds, you'll find this book helpful and interesting.
