About the Author
Michael Rosenblum is a Software Architect/Development DBA at Dulcian, Inc. where he is responsible for system tuning and application architecture. Michael supports Dulcian developers by writing complex PL/SQL routines and researching new features. He is the co-author of PL/SQL for Dummies (Wiley Press, 2006) and author of a number of database-related articles (IOUG Select Journal, ODTUG Tech Journal). Michael is an Oracle ACE, a frequent presenter at various regional and national Oracle user group conferences (Oracle OpenWorld, ODTUG, IOUG Collaborate, RMOUG, NYOUG, etc), and winner of the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 Best Speaker Award. Learning PL/SQL from Experts

I was a little bit puzzled when I got this book: who is the author? There are 15 of them! After reading it, I now believe it is a very good idea to combine knowledge from multiple experts into a single book, especially for a technical book. I would like to see more of these kinds of books coming.

The writers of this book are all very active in the Oracle community, most are authors, Oracle ACE, members of the OakTable network, etc. I actually met a few of them at seminars and user group activities. One of them, Arup Nanda, was once my RAC class instructor, and I've always been impressed by his ability to explain complicated issues in a simple and interesting way. In this book, he discussed dependencies and invalidations with the same clear logic.

The book has 15 chapters, with each author contributing one. Every chapter has a brief summary. Almost all of them go deeply into the topic using very good sample codes, traces, and tkprof output to prove their points.

You may read it as a book focusing on the newest and most powerful PL/SQL features, or you can treat it as 15 top level technical articles - each concentrates on a specific PL/SQL field and digs deeply into it. You'll learn the best practices from their expertise; real experiences and lessons. You can also gain lots of TTTs: Tips, Tricks and Traps to avoid. Many new data dictionary views mentioned by the authors are also very useful.

Based on the needs of my current work, I went through some chapters in close detail, and browsed others for future reference. The book touches the most recent Oracle version, including many new features of 11gR2.

This book is not for beginners. You will need some PL/SQL background to start with. I've been working with PL/SQL since version 6, but in the past few years, I've used more SQL than PL/SQL. By reading this book, I've realized how much more powerful PL/SQL is now than in the past. As new features come, we will have to keep learning. Often difficult tasks can become much easier if you learn the new ways rather than stick with what's familiar.

The order of the chapters does not matter. You can pick up any topic and start reading. Some similar issues are addressed by multiple authors, with each expert offering a different perspective on the problem.

I'd group the chapters into 3 main topics:

PART 1: What To Do And What Not To Do (Chapters 1, 2, 9,10, 12)

These chapters discuss when and when not to use PL/SQL from functional and performance points of view. They also discuss the differences between SQL and PL/SQL engines, the dynamic PL/SQL programming and its pros and cons, the different types of cursors and their usage, etc. Data modeling is not only important at the design stage but is also an evolutionary process.

PART 2: How To Do It Right (Chapters 5,7,8.11,14)

These chapters discuss coding standards and conventions, unit testing, best practices, etc. These are critical factors for successful application development, especially when you have a large group of developers working on a very complex application. Like Chapter 7 says, good developers need to `know your code' and to make your code simple, well organized, well documented, effective and efficient.

PART 3: How to Do More and Better (chapters 3, 4, 6, 13,15)

These chapters discuss more specific topics, including parallel processing, conditional compilations, bulk operations, methods to identify and measure performance issues as well as methods to shorten dependency chains and reducing cascading invalidations.

Chapter 6 is one of my favorate topics. Bulk operation is a very useful but underused feature. This chapter demonstrates the huge performance benefit you can get using bulk processing. The author also provides methods and solutions to find and handle the pitfalls of using bulk processing. The examples are interesting and the results are persuasive.

My coworker saw this book and agreed it is very good. I strongly recommend it to Oracle developers and DBAs.

I received a hard copy of this book. To me the line spacing is rather small for text, but the sample codes look fine.

Practical advice for PL/SQL coding

This is a book written by 15 of the top PL/SQL experts and each of them gets to take you deep into their chosen subject matter. Books like this are great in the fact that you get in-depth coverage of the material being presented by someone who is passionate about the subject.

The authors show you what you can do to help make your code better for not only your benefit, but for the benefit of those that will come later and have to maintain your code.

Here is a brief description of some of my favorite chapters:

Chapter 1 shows why using PL/SQL might not be the best choice in a given situation. If you can get the job done strictly with SQL, then PL/SQL just adds unnecessary complexity and resource use. If you're coming from a programming background and haven't done much database work, this chapter would be a great reference for you.

Chapter 2 covers dynamic SQL and the pros and cons of working with it. In my experience this technique is underused, and too many people try to make a single general purpose (static) query that is hard to tune and work with. When done right, dynamic SQL can offer significant performance benefits without introducing complexity or security issues.

Chapter 7 talks about knowing your code. This is not only the code you write, but the code you must maintain. When your manager comes and asks you to make a change to some code, you need to know how that data is being used, what calls that code, and how the change will affect anything using it downstream. By putting the practices mentioned here into use, you will make it easier on yourself when making those changes and will have the confidence to know where and how to test your changes to verify nothing broke with the changes made.

Chapter 14 talks about why using standards are important. Many might just gloss over this chapter, but I feel that it's one of the most important things to learn. Whether you're working in a really small group of people or working on a team of 50+ developers, having standards is critical. I've worked in shops where nobody would code to a standard, and that was made much worse when you get a call at 2AM and you had to troubleshoot someones code. I've also worked in shops where there was a documented standard and those late night calls with critical issues were handled quickly because of it. While the company's given standard might not be your preferred coding style, adhering to it will make your life much easier when you have to make changes to someone else's code that followed that same standard.

Each of the chapters made me think about my coding style and how I write and test code. There are a lot of ideas to be gleaned from this book. While a couple of the authors will readily admit that their standards might not be right or make sense to be implemented in your shop, they all agree that using some type of standards is critical to saving time in both writing and maintaining code. Interestingly, there is some advice that I will take and use in other programming languages as it's that universal in scope.

This is definitely a book that's worth reading if you work with PL/SQL as a developer or DBA, and is one that I will recommend to my coworkers.

MUST READ - DBAs & Developers

This is a MUST READ book for all DBAs & Developers. This is like having 30min 1-on-1 session with 15 subject matter experts.

As a DBA I always face challenges when explaining to developers the DOs & DONTs in SQL & PL/SQL.
The reasons being -
1. PL/SQL & SQL (oracle) has evolved a lot in last few years sometimes we don't keep track of new features.
2. Most of the developers practice either Java & or C++,C# religion, hence they look at PL/SQL with prejudiced view.

Even DBAs also get away with their jobs using their ancient knowledge about PL/SQL from 7.3 era.

Some of us do try to keep our knowledge up-to-date with white papers/articles, and try to make use of it but not effectively.

This book explains developers how/when to use SQL vs PL/SQL effectively. It explains the coding styles/standards & their use. It not only explains DOs, but it explains DONTs as well.

DBAs - One of the biggest challenge we normally have to deal with is code review...... making sure that it is not violating standards, compliance guideline and that we get it right when it is ready for implementation.... This book has tips to develop automated scripts/queries... just by running these we will be able to catch most of the violations.

Developers - Even though most of them have knowledge about the PL/SQL objects & standard SQLs, but one tend to loose the touch as
- They get pressured by deadlines
- Busy gaining business knowledge
- Keeping up with new features of their native programming languages.

This book will provide you in-depth knowledge on using SQL and or PL/SQL "effectively".....Please note this book is not for beginners as it assumes you know the syntax & feature.

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

With regular breaching of websites/data in the news (e.g. eBay, Three, VTech), this book should be of interest to many.

This book aims to show you what information can be found via Google search queries, much of it never intended for a public audience (e.g. credit card numbers, passwords). The book is targeted at those wanting to protect their sites/data, those wanting to get more out of Google search queries, hackers, and the curious.

Some of the tools are introduced with little discussion, so some degree of IT-awareness is required. Also a few areas require scripting knowledge (typically using perl).

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Google Search Basics

The book does assume some IT knowledge and some tools (e.g. Tcpdump, MRTG, Nmap, ntop) are introduced with insufficient detail for the beginner, but this should be ok for many developers.

The book is suitable for those wanting to get more out of Google searching, those wanting to protect their websites/data, hackers, and curious people.

Sometimes the book felt a bit dated. Checking the table of contents with the previous 2007 edition of the book, shows they are around 90% the same. The screenshots should have titles, this would make subsequent searching easier.

Overall, this is an interesting and informative read. In these times of frequent data breaches (e.g. eBay, Three, VTech), this should be required reading for anyone interesting in protecting data. Highly recommended.

Very Much worth the price!

The reason I purchased this book were scammers were trying to rent my house for half the market rate. Law enforcement and the FBI were not able to help. Law Enforcement because it was out of their jurisdiction, plus there was no crime, because money never changed hands. And the FBI because the dollar amount was too low.
With this book I was able to track down the money mule, and was able to get the mules banking information, name, bank routing code, Home address, phone number etc.
The main focus of the book is finding unsecured information over the internet. The tools that were provided were very valuable. One of the tools that I am currently using Alerts me via Email when anyone puts up one of these half price ads on Craig’s list or the internet in general.
Some of the searches I did showed how unsecured the internet really is. With some simple searches I was able to find information that should have been confidential. A must read if you’re a LAN Administrator on how to protect your severs from curious lookers.

Great guide. I highly recommend it for anyone who uses Google, not just Penetration Testers. Some great tips for developers as well, using Google to search a site for web server and programming errors, although by the time Google sees it everyone else does as well.

Great discount on Amazon.com price compared to college book store. Shipped quickly and in great condition. This book was just the book I needed for class. Easy to read, and reflects current issues in the growing population of the aging.

About the Author
Charles Edward Chapel was born in Iowa in 1904. Graduating from the Naval Academy at Annapolis and serving in the Marine Corps, he was a prolific writer, publishing thousands of articles on subjects such as police science, aviation, and firearms. One of the nation’s most active gun writers, he published nearly a dozen books on the subject. Guns of the Old West is considered his greatest work. Chapel died in 1967.

Dissapointing

I was disappointed with this book. The illustrations were drawings not photos, therefore there was no detail. The author would go on for pages telling stories that were nice to read but had nothing to do with the guns. I wouldn't use it as a reference because if you were to look up a particular gun, you get a drawing with little or no detailed info on the gun, which to me would be of little value. I did gain some knowledge of old west guns, but overall the book was a disappointment.

I used to check this book out of my school library some 30-40 years ago ... often! It still is a great overall survey of at least the popular firearms of the West - just as the title says. Good pictures, good script, book in great condition, ... a good addition to my own personal library.

About the Author
Like her main character, Marivi Soliven moved from the Philippines to California, where she now lives and works as an interpreter. Several of her short stories and essays from her 16 books have appeared in anthologies and she taught creative writing at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, the Ayala Museum and the University of California at San Diego.�This is her first novel.

FATE IS FICKLE

In THE MANGO BRIDE you will be introduced to a variety of women from different generations and divergent social classes, some who remain in their native Philippines and others who, for a variety of reasons, leave to begin new lives in the United States. One of these women is Concha, the matriarch of a prominent Filipino family, is more concerned with what the neighbors will think and how her family's status in the community will be negatively affected than with the protection and welfare of her family members. Another is Clara, an impoverished young woman who is seen as an unsuitable mate for the scion of a wealthy family. The fallout of their individual actions and a decades old scandal culminates in Oakland, California when the paths of the offspring of these two women cross with unexpected and tragic results.

Addressed by the author, Marivi Soliven, are questions like: What is it that constitutes real freedom and is it more difficult for a woman to achieve than a man because of economic obstacles? Is love and concern for another human being what embodies and epitomizes the true definition of "family"? How often does the pursuit of a dream have unanticipated and nightmarish consequences? This is a family saga containing a myriad of components that run the gamut from immigration, mail order brides, social prejudice and class conflict to veteran's issues, domestic violence and the problems of assimilation. While possessing some soap opera undertones and a lack of explanation as to the meaning of some of the Tagalog phrases used, I nevertheless found THE MANGO BRIDE to be an absorbing and thought provoking read that presented an informative and exhaustive look at the Filipino culture.

A wonderful book

It's wonderful! Made me miss Manila. The bus scene in Edsa, the snack vendors in the neighborhood, the leafy campus in Quezon City -- they all evoke the unique atmosphere of the Philippines. So many parts of the book made me hungry, too! Now I'm craving delicious Filipino specialties like "ukoy" and "pancit molo." The ending left me wanting for more. I wanted to read another chapter! But it was a smart way to end the book. This is going to be made into a movie and I'm looking forward to it!

Excellent, compelling, culturally sensitive, wonderful story.

Once I started the Mango Bride, found I could not put it down. I admire how the author is able to bring all of the characters together and more importantly do justice to hard topics like immigration; class; what is deemed "proper"in the Phillippines by older generations compared to those Pilipinos like myself who are first generation; mail order brides and domestic violence. I know that I will be giving "The Mango Bride" as presents for my friends and family. Even though this is fiction, Pilipino cousins and children of first generation Pilipinos will appreciate the subleties of the characters in this important book. And if you are just looking for a good, compelling story, "The Mango Bride" is for you. Marivi-Maraming salamat for taking the time to write a thoughtful, well researched, easy to read, culturally right on book.

A very good introduction into animal cell culture. It was a required book for a stem cell class and internship, which has provided me an excellent background for my needs. This is intended for those looking for the information. So this is not an intended pick-up and read about stem cell book.
