My hope in writing this book is to share the information about the daily lives of the Polish people living in the rural areas of Poland. The book also describes some of the reasons for leaving Poland, the trek across Poland and Germany to the ports, the voyage across the North Atlantic, arrival in America and their life in their new country. I used my grandfather as the central figure in this book but this is not his biography. I used details of my grandfather’s life but added accounts of other people to tell a complete life story. My grandfather was not a person whose accomplishments would be in history books. However, his life is an example of a typical Polish immigrant. I felt that tying the information to one person would make a more interesting story and easier to show the impact of various events had on our ancestor's life. Our immigrant ancestors are the foundation of our roots in the United States. Our lives would be much different if they had not endured the challenges of emigration from Poland. Do not underestimate their contributions. They may have left us some material wealth but the most important contribution they left is their descendants and their role in the factories and farms of the United States. Their lives were building blocks in the growth of their new country.

Book is a good source for tracing prior generations from Poland to emigration to the United States during the late-19th & early-20th century. Helpful to me by analog, since I am the 2nd generation born in the U.S. who is of Polish descent.

Grade 4 Up A collection of spooky stories, competently adapted and retold (sometimes quite freely) from world folklore, including Japan, Africa, and Latin America, as well as Europe and the U.S. Fairy tales are represented, from Grimm's The Robber Bridegroom to the modern urban folktale Lavender, a reworking of the phantom hitchhiker story. Some tales are familiar, appearing in one form or another in various collections, e.g., Tailypo, but many are not. Stories have also been adapted from the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Bunyan, and Washington Irving. The stories drawn from collections of regional American folklore are not only the freshest, but often the scariest. Sources are fully documented at the back of the book. The cover has just the right touch of gruesomeness to attract readers, with bats, rats, weird faces, and a skeleton arm escaping from the grave. Almost every story is illustrated with a full-page picture in pen-and-ink and wash. These are well crafted but, with some notable exceptions, don't always capture the true terror of the tales, and don't enhance the text in a spine-tingling manner. Many of the stories will be effective as read-alouds. There are some delicious shivers here, with plenty of fodder for an active imagination, as well as excitement. Great short stories!

kids always sort of himm and haw at reading, but once started they not only can't put this book down, but are up to show me or tell me a part of the 'scary' story. They're a good length for my 6y and 9y old- they normally get in a couple while I cook dinner. My kids love all things horror, so these are far from being too scary for them. That said, they love the unexpected twists and endings. I'll be ordering more!

Great for kids who scare easily

These stories are great for young ones. My 7 year old is a bit more afraid of things than most kids his age and can get a little frightened from these, but not so afraid that he complains. The stories are really fun for the whole family to read aloud on rainy nights or around the fire pit.

For the love of books and bookstores, long may they endure

My abiding love affair with books began some thirty-five years ago when as a young child, I accompanied my mom to a used bookstore. We lived on a tight budget and books were considered a luxury, but my mother, bless her heart, would save up to take me book shopping (we didn't have a public library close by) at the local used bookstore, which was really more a room that had been let to the bookstore owner. I remember being in raptures when I was able to find Nancy Drew hardcovers for bargain prices like 50 cents. Those bookstore visits inspired a lifelong affinity for books, especially old books, found in dusty nooks and crannies in used bookstores, and I have never stopped acquiring and collecting books since, and THE BOOKSHOP BOOK is one that all bibliophiles like me can easily relate to.

THE BOOKSHOP BOOK by Jen Campbell captures the love of books by focusing on bookshops around the world and among the famous and easily recognizable names such as The Tattered Cover in Denver, CO and Shakespeare and Company in Paris, there are lesser known, yet no less beloved bookstores in various regions around the world. The author also includes impressions of authors and their opinions of their favorite bookstores, as well as interesting "Bookish Facts" that make this an engaging read.

I read this book in one sitting, no mean feat considering my busy schedule, but I was that engrossed. I plan to re-read it too and make notes. There are treasures to be unearthed within such as titles of books that had escaped my attention previously, names of bookstores that I would definitely like to look up such as the Alabama Booksmith and more.

If you love books, the tangible and intangible pleasures of book selling and book buying, then this book is definitely a must-read.

Independent bookstores still scatter the earth...can this possibly be?!

As an online bookseller, I basked for days in the light of this book, following Jen Campbell around the world as she visited a seeming unending number of "brick and mortar" independent book stores. A few of the stores that she shares about are now closed (I was sad but hardly surprised.) However, the vast majority of the stores she "visits" are open and dare I say thriving?! (I was thrilled and very surprised by this fact.) In fact, I had to revisit the publication page to confirm that yes, indeed, this book was published in 2014 and that many of these stores have opened since 2000. I smiled every night as I read, remembering my life long dream to have a "brick and mortar" bookstore, coffee shop, gathering place for booksellers and lefty political activists. My husband was scared witless by my nighttime smiling episodes, afraid that one morning I would wake and up and declare that "Yes! There was room in our smallish town for another struggling bookshop." We have two at present and he thanks his lucky stars that I have been content to sell online for, lo, these many years. Still, Jen Campbell's book gave me that sense of warm, long ago hope in my gut and allowed me to hear whispers of "maybe....maybe" once again. Read this book if you love books, bookstores and, especially, if you've ever bought books rather than food. You are the person who will love this book as much as I do.....

Fascinationg Little Book

I loved the title & premise of the Bookshop Book and it did not disappoint. I never write reviews but perhaps I should. The author describes book shops that are all over the world, how the bookshops look, the types of books some owners carry, the quirkiness of both the owners of the bookshop and the setting of each bookshop visited from hobbit size places to large & modern "shops." Halfway through the book, I googled bookshops in my state and now have a large list of shops to visit. The concern of e-books versus regular books is mentioned and after reading Ms. Campbell's and other bookstore owners thoughts I am no longer worried about disappearing bookstores. This book is interesting, has a few fun tidbits tucked inside and well worth reading. I am a reading addict and now, armed with new places to visit I hope to never recover!

Nice arrangements for beginning church performers

I purchased this book for my 8 year old granddaughter who loves to perform in church. I have been teaching her for 2 years, and this book is a good difficulty level for her. I agree with the previous reviewer who said the hand positioning is not standard, and there is some changing of positions, but so far, my granddaughter has been able to adjust to them.

If you are looking for a higher level book of the same nature, Phillip Keveren's book entitled "Shout to the Lord" has some of the same songs as this book, but it is of the late intermediate/early advanced difficulty level. I have that book also, and I enjoy it very much, and have used it in church services several times.

Nice Selection for Federation Contest

Though the hand positions are not basic, and do involve some changing of positions, my students are very happy with this book for Federation Contest Hymn Playing for Primary Class B and C. The songs are all Christian Praise songs that they know and enjoy playing. In addition to Awesome God, Lord, I Lift Your Name on High and Shout to the Lord are all popular with students.

Great read

This is the second trilogy for the Heretic series and a definite must read. Cade and his Templars are in the fight of their lives and for our lives, although we don't know it and they don't disappoint. In my opinion, this is the greatest series of Templar fantasy around. Joe Nasisse is one of the best writers for that genre'. Once you get involved in this series it is hard to put down and waiting for Joe to write the next book is hard but so worth the wait.

Second box set on the Templars series. I've read them all and they just keep getting better and better. Waiting for more after completing book 6 and the plot twist near the end. It's a really great buy for both box sets right now. Dive head long into a world of good verses really evil and what it takes to protect us from these darK forces

The stories and the writing are good, but these editions are absolutely riddled with typos, writing mistakes, and continuity errors. What ever happened to proof reading and editors?
