About the Author
Karin Stulz has extensive experience in the administrative professional field. Her career at Northern Michigan University began with a variety of full-time administrative professional positions. Karin is now the Assistant Professor-Office Information Systems at Northern Michigan University.

Kellie A. Shumack is an associate professor of instructional technology and a department head in the College of Education at Auburn Montgomery. She has worked as an administrative assistant and has taught at the secondary, community college, and university levels. Kellie has designed numerous college courses in both the online and face-to-face environments. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, two textbooks, and several book chapters, and she has presented at over 40 professional conferences. Kellie was awarded the 2012 Auburn Montgomery College of Education Excellence in Teaching Award, received the 2010 Delta Pi Epsilon Outstanding Doctoral Research Award, and maintains a certificate to teach online courses at the postsecondary level.

Dr. Patsy J. Fulton-Calkins' experience in the field is extensive. Her past experience in the workplace includes working as an administrative professional for large corporations for six years. Early in her career, she completed the CPS certification. Her teaching experience includes over 13 years at the university, community college, and high school levels. In addition to her teaching experience, she has worked as an administrator in the following positions: • Chancellor of Oakland Community College (the chief executive officer), Oakland County, Michigan • President of Brookhaven College, Dallas, Texas • Vice-President of Instruction at El Centro College and Cedar Valley College, Dallas, Texas • Division Chairperson of Business and Social Science, Cedar Valley College, Dallas, Texas Her present position includes working with Tom Monaghan Associates, Inc. as a senior consultant in institutional advancement work with clients across the United States. Additionally, she is an adjunct professor at the university level. Her educational credentials include a B.B.A., an M.B.Ed., and a Ph.D. Honors include Outstanding Alumnus, University of North Texas; Transformational Leader in Community Colleges; Who's Who in America, Outstanding Woman in Management; Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International; Beta Gamma Sigma, National Honorary Business Fraternity; and Piper Professor.

About the Author
Michel Danino was born in France in 1956. At the age of 21, after four years of higher scientific studies, he decided to live in India, where he first took part in the English translation, editing and publication of books related to Sri Aurobindo and Mother. A student of Indian civilization, culture and history, he has lectured widely and published research papers in journals of archaeology and Indology. In 1996, he wrote a brief study of the Aryan problem in the Indian context, The Invasion That Never Was (2nd edition 2000), further enlarged a decade later in a French book (English version forthcoming). In 2010, he authored a comprehensive study of the Sarasvati River, The Lost River: On the Trail of the Sarasvati (Penguin India). Michel Danino's work for the protection of a Shola forest in the Nilgiris in the 1980s and 1990s led to the creation of Tamil Nadu's first joint forest management group involving local citizens. His other interests include nature photography and a multimedia project for the creation of quality educational material on India's heritage. He currently lives near Coimbatore in south India.

A lack of knowledge about their past means most Indians have no objective perspective of their present, nor are they able to cogently argue why India's contributions to the world have been so often and so grossly misrepresented. This book attempts to put together, in one short read, a guide on India's past, its achievements, its thinkers, its contributions, and also tries to identify the causes that have led to this strange sense of dissociation and lack of pride that so many Indians have for India and its culture and heritage.

The first part of the book, titled "A Thousand-Branched Tree" covers the history of India's scientific minds and scientific discoveries, the vast reach of India's culture that pervades most of the world today, its contributions to art and culture, and its deep sense of respect for nature - yes; green was cool in India a few thousand years before the rest of the world discovered that annihilating the environment was, to put it mildly, not a good idea.

The second part then treads ground close to the present, and is titled, "Indian Culture at the Crossroads". This section covers the problems facing India and its cultural identity, and its causes.

The final section is "India and the World". This section looks at the distortions, stereotypes and outright lies that have been used to malign India.

Note that there is enough material that is likely to be offend people with sensitive sensibilities. Leftists, liberals, and communists for one - the historical kind, the ones in the media, and the ones with pretensions to intellect, since they have been at the forefront of the admirably successful campaign over the past several decades to run down India and its culture. However, when arguing with the wind of facts at your back, the proper response should be introspection from those so offended, not invective. There has also been a concerted effort by some in western media - a very smartly choreographed drama - that utilizes oft-repeated lies, a selective use of distortions, and a glib overlooking of evidence and contrarian evidence. The most pernicious example is the persistent perpetration of the fiction that there was a so-called Aryan invasion of India.

This book can be read from cover to cover in three hours or so. I recommend that people interested in and who care for India would be well advised to spend these few hours with this book. They will be amply rewarded and enriched by that time.

India's Scientific Mind

In the space of 121 concise, sometimes cryptic verses, Aryabhta, born in 476CE, possibly the greatest mathematician ever, gave us the following advances:
. a proposed value of pi (') equal to 62832/20000 or 3.1.416 ... and a surprisingly perceptive explanation that this value is only 'approximate';
. an ingenious method for the extraction of square and cube roots
. a succinct and precise table of sines (or jya), in the form of just two lines of coded syllables, giving sine values of angles up to 90� (in twelve increments of 3� 45')...
. a statement that the earth is a sphere with a diameter of 1,050 yojanas, which comes fairly close to the actual figure;
. a prescient observation that the earth's rotation is what causes the fixed stars to appear to move. (... Aryabhata's system remained basically geocentric; heliocentricism appears first with Parameswara and more clearly with his disciple Nilakantha Somayaji (1444-1545), two celebrated Kerala astronomers who predate Copernicus.)
...
. a correct understanding of the basic mechanism of solar and lunar eclipses, which he attributed to the moon's disc and the earth's shadow respectively;
. a notion that the moon and planets are not self-luminous but actually reflect sunlight.
But this is not all. Aryabhata's work on yugas led him to "a contemplation of the infinite which was a hallmark of Indian savants: 'Time is without beginning or end,' said Aryabhata. From this 'contemplation' flowed insights which our rational mind can only regard as 'coincidences': the value of a 'day of Brahma', 4.32 billion years, 'happens' to be almost exactly the age of the earth.' [pg 27]

In contrast, "In the seventeenth century, Archbishop James Usher revised those calculations (not the Indian calculations) and proposed that the universe had been created in 4004 BCE, a belief that prevailed until Darwin." [pg 34].

Lest the enlightened mind think that Aryabhata was a lone flash-in-the-pan in the wilderness of Indian scientific thought, there is more.

The single greatest mathematical concept of all time has to be the decimal place value notational system, and it was developed in India.
The 594 CE incscription from Sankheda (near Baroda) is the oldest dated Indian document containing a number written in the place-value form. ... [pg 62]
Sayana and the Speed of Light
As far as we know, it was measured for the first time by the Danish astronomer Ole Roemer in 1675, with an error of 25 percent, and more precisely in the nineteenth century. But there is a curious comment by the fourteenth-century Vedic commentator Sayana on a hymn of the Rig Veda addressed to Surya, the sun-god. Sayana records a tradition associated with Surya:
Thus it is remembered:
[O Surya] you who traverse 2,202 yojanas in half a minute.
In much of ancient literature, the yojana is equated to 8,000 human lengths, or 13.6 km taking an average height of 1.70 m. ... And the nimesha's value is generally 16/75th of a second. With these values, Sayana's statement yields a speed of 280,755 km/s, remarkably close to the known velocity of light (299,792 km/s, thus some 6 percent too small). [pg 35]

Quantum physicist Edwin Schrodinger counted the Bhagavad-Gita and the Upanishads among his favourite readings (and named his dog 'Atman'!):
This life of yours which you are living is not entirely a piece of this entire existence, but in a certain sense the whole; only this whole is not so constituted that it can be surveyed in one single glance. This, as we know, is what the Brahmins express in this sacred, mystic formula which is yet really so simple and so clear: tat tvam asi, this is you.... [pg 70]
Speaking of medicine, the notion of "invisible creatures" finds mention in Indian texts:
Thus the Ashtangahridayasamhita refers to blood corpuscles that are 'circular, legless, invisible, and coppery in colour' - strangely reminiscent of red blood cells... [pg 39]
India's contributions were not limited to contemplations on the universe and the world. They extended to outside India too, in the form of commerce for instance.
... cowrie shells originating form India or the Maldives were used as currency in Kenya and Egypt in the third millenium BCE
... Recent excavations at the Egyptian Red Sea port of Berenike have confirmed that an extensive sea trade existed between India and the Middle East from the third century BCE onward... [pg 52]

From about 500 BCE, the celebrated 'wootz' steel produced in south India was exported to the Middle East and Europe; it was called 'Damascus steel' as it was there that it was made into sharp swords

The ancient Iranian port city of Siraf (modern Taheri) was entirely built with Indian teakwood.
[pg 67-68]

One firm evidence for the spread of Hinduism comes to us from Armenia in the second century BCE. This region then included a part of Turkey and a part of Iran, and two Indian princes had travelled there from Kannauj, bringing with them a cult of Krishna and founding a city called Veeshap. They were killed in some quarrel, but their descendants built two temples... The temples, which contained two brass statues about five and seven meters high of a god called 'Kissaneh' (Krishna, obviously), were destroyed about 301 CE by 'Saint' Gregory the Illuminator, amid the slaughter of over 1000 resisting Hindus, including the temple priests; the survivors were forcibly baptized. [pgs 53, 54]
In the eighteenth century, for instance, Voltaire pointed out that the Christian use of holy water had its origin in the sanctity attached to Ganga water. [pg 54]

On The Bhagvad Gita
-------------------
Chapter 7 is titled, "The Gita and the Problem of Action". This holy song of the Lord has inspired Indians to action and has acted as a guiding light for millions over the millenia. The Independence movement was no different.
Indeed, the revolutionaries in Bengal and Maharashtra drew such inspiration from the Gita that the colonial authorities came to regard it as a 'gospel of terrorism', and it became one of the most sought-after pieces of evidence in police raids. It is also one of the chief influences cited in the 1918 Rowlatt Sedition Committee Report, side by side with Swami Vivekananda's works. [page 146]
It is then little surprise to read what so-called Indologists like Wendy Doniger have to say about the Gita.
Witness this statement made in 2000 by Wendy Doniger ... : 'The Bhagavad Gita is not as nice a book as some Americans think,' she informed her audience. 'Throughout the Mahabharata ... Krishna goads human beings into all sorts of murderous and self-destructive behaviors as war ... The Gita is a dishonest book; it justifies war.'
Genuine philosophers like Sri Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda, and countless others, on the other hand, saw in the Gita much enlightenment.

The Gita had a profound impact on the US philosopher and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson:
I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-Gita. It was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy... It [Vedic thought] is sublime as night and a breathless ocean.
As an aside, J. Robert Oppenheimer, often called "the father of the atomic bomb", remarked that the first atomic bomb test "brought to mind words from the Bhagavad Gita: "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.""

Emerson's disciple, Henry David Thoreau, spoke no less highly of Hindu thought:
In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmological philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seems puny. [pg 59]
India and the World
In the third section, the author points out several incongruities that arise if you compare Indian literature and the doctrine of hatred and division sowed by English colonialists, missionaries, and more recently by communist historians.
Nowhere in the Sangam literature (the most ancient in Tamil) do we find a hint of a cultural clash with the North or with Vedic culture. Quite the contrary, we find the Vedas and the recitation of Vedic mantras praised from the earliest layers of this literature. [page 170]
It is perhaps so often overlooked that "distinctiveness is not separateness."

Again, the terrible lies that "India's numerous tribes never had anything to do with Hinduism until it was 'imposed' upon them by Brahman 'missionaries'" is not borne by facts.
Not only is there no trace of any such 'imposition', Hinduism is in reality the result of a long and fruitful interaction between Vedic culture and tribal cults, with many tribal deities enrichening the Hindu pantheon and tribal practices, rituals, and art forms getting absorbed - a wholly organic process controlled by no authority or clergy. [page 171]
It perhaps does not require repetition that the problem is not with the religion, but with those who have misused and misrepresented religion and the name of religion for their own selfish ends.
"Francis Xavier had this to write in a letter to his fellow Jesuits at Rome's Society of Jesus in 1543:
When all are baptized I order all the temples of their false gods to be destroyed and all the idols to be broken in pieces. I can give you no idea of the joy I feel in seeing this done, witnessing the destruction of the idols by the very people who but lately adored them." [page 172]
The author also laments the ubiquitous practice of self-censorship followed by historians in India. This is supposedly done "for fear of offending today's Muslim Indians. Yet the latter are no more responsible for them than today's Germans are responsible for Nazi atrocities."

Yet another blow against India's struggle for truth is wielded by Marxist historiographers like Bipin Chandra, who in his textbook on Modern India "used the words "terrorism" and "terrorists" seven times in just two pages to describe revolutionaries in India's freedom struggle, no doubt aware of how the word's connotation has shifted in recent decades. ... there is no excuse for using it in a modern textbook without a suitable explanation: India's freedom fighters did not explode bombs in public places with a view to causing as many deaths as possible, nor did they take hostages or use suicide bombers..." [page 181]

In the words of the author, "Marxist historiography is in many ways the inheritor and continuer of the colonial, Eurocentric view of India, although in a new garb. ... it finds no intrinsic or endearing value in Indian civilization or in its contributions to humanity."

This book, as I said at the beginning, is a short read. The writing style is engaging and simple. The organization of the chapters is logical and each chapter is focused on a theme or single topic, and therefore easy to follow. There is a rich list of references at the end of the book. This book should help educate Indians about the unsurpassed richness of their culture and heritage, its scientific spirit that has fostered innovations for thousands of years, and also of the challenges facing Indian society, which is under stress from several quarters. The need of the hour is to raise awareness among the youth to these issues.

About the Author
Karl Jenkins is a Welsh composer and musician, famed for such contemporary classics as Adiemus, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Palladio, and Benedictus. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Wales, has been made both a Fellow and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, where a room has been named in his honor, and has fellowships at Cardiff University, Swansea University, The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Trinity College Carmarthen, and Swansea Metropolitan University. He was awarded the OBE in 2005 the CBE in 2010, for "services to music." Sam Jackson is the Managing Editor of Classic FM, responsible for all of the station’s on-air programming, a role he has held since 2011. He sits on the governing body of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and on the University of York Music Department’s advisory board. In addition, Sam is the author of two Sunday Times bestselling books about classical music.

Well written book which I enjoyed. The atmosphere could be described as 'cozy' and as such this book was very welcome during the cold winter in Norway. If you seek a book with juicy stories over and opinions about his fellow composers in England, seek elsewhere. Jenkins is too much of a gentleman to be that outspoken in 'public'. Nevertheless it was a nice read and I would recommend this book to anyone who knows Jenkins' music.

A comprehensive review after reading all the others

I wanted to give a review about this book but before I do, I feel that you need to know something about my background and how it relates in my synopsis of the text. I am a freelance patternmaker that lives in New York. I have a BFA in Fashion Design and Marketing and I have been making patterns for roughly about 16 years. I have also taken some additional classes in recent years to learn new techniques and enhance previous ones I have learned. I own several other books ranging from basic patternmaking, books that specialize in lingerie patterns, and menswear pattern books. I own patternmaking software and I am currently using all the things I have learned and applying it to drafting patterns on my computer. I own two dress forms (a half scale and a standard one) and I know how to drape. I know how to sew and construct simple garments such as a t-shirt and intricate ones like bridal gowns. I also know how to do rub-offs (copy garments) and how to grade (change the dimension of a standard pattern to fit a larger or smaller person). I wouldn't call myself a know-it-all or a master at this but I would say I know a great deal more than the average Joe when it comes to making patterns.

That being said, I have come across all types of people that are learning or want to learn about patternmaking. Most of these individuals are designers (or people who think they are designers), fashion design students in college, people that sew as a hobby, or individuals that want to make some unique clothes and save some pennies in the process. All of these are good reasons to learn the skill. In order to learn anything, you need to start with the basics. When I refer to the basics, I mean that you need to start with knowing what a pattern is, what it's used for, and how YOU will incorporate its use in what you need to do. By knowing this, you can figure out where you need to start and what type of book will give you the information you need to get you there.

When I was studying in college back in 1993, a very good teacher introduced me to the basics of patternmaking. She instilled in me the importance of accuracy, explained the use of the tools, showed me how to measure and incorporated the application of those measurements in developing the basic pattern (also referred to as a sloper or block). This was where I was introduced to the book, PATTERNMAKING FOR FASHION DESIGN (1st Edition). Although I used this book, it wasn't introduced into the curriculum until my third patternmaking class and the reason for this I think was because the teacher felt it may have been too advanced for a beginner with no prior knowledge of patternmaking like me. The first patternmaking book I was ever introduced to was HOW TO DRAFT BASIC PATTERNS (4th Edition) by Ernestine Kopp, Vittorina Rolfo, Beatrice Zelin, and Lee Gross. Even though that book was more basic than Helen Joseph-Armstrong's book, you still need to know the basics of the human body, measuring, and how to use the tools properly and I feel the best way to learn those things is from a qualified teacher or industry expert. Books will mean very little to you if you can't relate to the information within and if you don't have a reference to gauge your performance like a teacher or a tangible sample of what you are doing.

Now for the most important part of this, the review:

Like I said previously, I own a hard copy of the original book and I also have this new 5th edition (a digital Kindle version on my tablet). I feel that this book is good for an individual that already knows the basics of making patterns and wants to learn about more intricate garments and how to make patterns for those garments.

PROS

1. In comparison to the 1st edition I own, they have added information about computerized patternmaking (not how to draft on a computer, just on developments related to the industry), a menswear section, a childrens section, more information on drafting knitwear patterns and swimsuits, detailed directions on jacket construction (which is one of the most challenging things in sewing, in my opinion), and how to copy ready made clothing design. If you are on the fence about getting an older edition, I say you should get this (unless you get the older edition for a very good price).

2. This edition highlights certain diagrams and instructions in a different color making following along easier for the reader.

3. It's available as an eBook, which for me is good because I like to refer back to certain sections if I have a question about a technique or process. Easier to carry around on a 7" tablet when I'm out on a freelance gig. Plus, the eBook is cheaper. I like that they've taken the step to make it available as an eBook. Hopefully, the other publishers will follow suit.

4. Very good illustrations.

CONS

1. Like a previous poster said, there are some errors with drafting the armhole for the basic pattern and they have some other numerical errors. For the asking price, they should make sure that these are perfect before demanding someone spend that amount of money. In my case, I purchased it for more of a reference guide. I have enough experience to correct the errors within when I draft patterns and the foresight to not even apply them to what I'm drafting.

2. Although I think the illustrations are good, a lot of them seem a bit dated style-wise. What's more important to the user of this book is that they grasp the concept of the style lines they want in the garment and be able to apply those techniques in developing a style that is aligned with current market trends.

I gave the book 4 stars because it does most of what it intends to and that is to inform the reader about various patternmaking techniques and how those techniques apply to the development of different styles across all markets, genders, size ranges, and age groups. It lost a star for the errors in the text, which is inexcusable.

Before I end, I would like to offer some advice, tips and suggestions that may help the previous posters and additional people looking to learn patternmaking or wanting to buy books on the subject.

When you use this or any patternmaking book, the measurements given within are a collection of general data taken from a small sample of human beings. Even if you magically happen to fit into one of those general categories, you still have to check and fit the final pattern by making muslin mock up. It would also help if you had an additional set of hands or a person that is knowledgeable in fitting to help you (you can't check your own back, your own shoulders or adjust a hemline properly without some assistance). That way, you know where the issues are and you can apply the corrections accurately for the best results.

Know how to measure and know how to convert fractions into decimals. (i.e. 1/2"=.05, 5/8"=.6250 etc.). It surprises me the amount of people I come into contact with that have no idea on how to use a tape measure.

Buy the right tools and learn how to use then properly. To make patterns, the most basic tools you need in you arsenal are:

1. An 18" C-Thru transparent inch/metric ruler
2. A plastic French curve
3. A hip curve
4. A pencil
5. An eraser
6. A tape measure
7. Paper (blue dot paper is the best option because it will help beginners with their accuracy by lining up the dots but if you don't have that option available to you, you can get a roll of that white paper they use at the doctor's office. The stuff that they roll out on the examination table that you sit on. You should be able to buy it at a medical supply store and almost every town or city has one).

In the beginning of most patternmaking books, you will see a more detailed list of supplies but if you have these basic things, you can make any pattern. If you do it more frequently or want to invest more in the process, you can buy additional tools.

Before buying this or any book, check your local library to see if they have a copy. You'll be surprised at what you find. You can also check the local college bookstore to see if the material is relevant before pulling the trigger. In New York, FIT is a good resource for this and it's open to the general public. A lot of local New York libraries in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens have patternmaking books in their collections.

If you can, take a class or find someone reputable that can teach you the basics. Once you have learned the basics and have the concept of how to create a pattern from scratch and how that relates to a finished garment, you will be able to better understand any book.

Check YouTube and the Internet for videos and how to blogs and/or posts.

In reference to the comment I made about the different types of people that want to learn patternmaking, I will offer a few book suggestions. All the books I am recommending I personally own.

If you are a designer wanting to make patterns for your collection, this book is a good recommendation but if you have absolutely no knowledge about the process, you may want to start with HOW TO DRAFT BASIC PATTERNS (4th Edition) by Ernestine Kopp, Vittorina Rolfo, Beatrice Zelin, and Lee Gross and after you have learned most of the basics, you can get the other book that accompanies this one titled DESIGNING APPAREL THROUGH THE FLAT PATTERN (6th Edition) by the same authors. It builds on the first book by helping you to develop more complex styles.

For fashion design students, this book is one that you are probably using or are going to use and it's appropriate in a college setting because you should have a professor that can instruct you on the proper way to make a pattern and that can point out any mistakes in this book and how you can correct or improve on them. A good additional read is APPAREL MAKING IN FASHION DESIGN by Injoo Kim and Mykyung Uh. I was able to borrow this from my local library and decided to invest in it after reading through it extensively. I took a patternmaking class in 2010 and the way the teacher instructed me is very similar to the method in this book (she didn't use this book in class and was not familiar with it). It gives very good and detailed instructions and the illustrations are very good and easy to follow. One of the best things about this book is the way that the author diagrams slash and spread techniques and shows the direction for scissor placement.

For the home sewers, I found that most of them have gained some of their knowledge from using commercial patterns which is a decent start but from a development standpoint, I think that THE PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PATTERNMAKING FOR FASHION DESIGNERS JUNIORS, MISSES, AND WOMEN by Lori A. Knowles is a good book for this category mainly because the book shows you how to develop a pattern based on a particular styles included in the book and how to change/develop some of those styles by changing a piece like a sleeve. The book has very detailed illustrations and reference styles by numbers so you can follow along. The beginning of the book has very good instructions on taking measurements on the body to develop the basic patterns and they even demonstrate the draping technique to develop the basic pattern. The book includes a really detailed measurement chart for regular, petite, and plus-sized women. There is also a menswear version of this book, which is rare in patternmaking books.

My best advice for the individual that wants to make an occasional pattern for sewing up a garment is to go to your local thrift store or Goodwill and buy a really cheap version of the garment you want to make that fits, take it apart stitch by stitch, iron the pieces flat, trace them on paper and you'll have a pattern. If you want more comprehensive lesson on this without taking the garment apart, refer to PART 6 CHAPTER 25 of this book. Google and YouTube are also your friends.

I know this was a really long read but I spent most of my Sunday evening writing this in hopes that it helps clear up some misconceptions and misunderstandings about the book.

*** UPDATE 3/15/12 ***

I was reading through some of the past reviews and one reviewer, 1st nest, made a very valid point in comparison to this edition and the 1st one. They have omitted a section of the book, a 52 page chapter at the end that discussed fitting problems and pattern corrections. For a beginner or even a seasoned pro, that particular section has a lot of good information for fitting and would prove useful if you were having problems with the fit of the garment (which is very common with your first draft). If I could adjust the way I rated the book based on this, I would probably lower it to 3.5 stars. All in all, this still is one of the most comprehensive books I have ever read about patternmaking.

If you can get your hands on a 1st edition, the fitting section alone would be well worth it.

Great book... if you have a teacher as well.

As an aspiring designer who can't afford to go to design school, I bought this book (and the draping book from the same author)in hopes of teaching myself how to make clothe. I decided to get this book after hearing about its common use in schools. I mean what better book to get than the one they use in fashion school right?

The good:
-A lot of variety. The book teaches you how to make the very basic and then how to distort it and transform it into whatever design you want.
-It has women's, men's and children's sections, as well as things such as bikinis and leotards.

The bad:
-Some of the directions are unclear. As someone who tried to learn with no outside help, I found myself extremely frustrated (specially in the beginning) when sometimes instructions seem to jump a step.
-The illustrations are not always clear. For instance in the pants fitting part of the book, it was hard to compare what I was seeing in real life to the drawn pictures in the book.
-Few sewing instructions. The book shows how to cut the pattern so the fabric can later be manipulated, but doesn't show you exactly how you would go about sewing that cut.
-Some of the methods are outdated. After consulting with someone that has been working in the industry for the last 25 years I leaned that a few of of the instructions and techniques given are no longer used in garment production. This idea was reenforced to me after I had a dress ruined because the defect on the pattern only showed itself after I tried sewing with a fine fabric.
-Some instructions are overly complicated. I find this specially in the sleeve instructions.

In all this is a good book if you already know the basics or if you have a teacher. I would have had little to no complaints if I fell into either categories when I bought it. It's a great resource and can sometimes even be used as source of inspiration for a design. I should also mention that although the book covers fittings, a lot of it you will have to learn on your own. I had occasions where I did all the book suggested and fail, only to later find a solution for a fit on my own.

Okay but needs improvement

The price is really great considering that the hardcover is much more expensive HOWEVER, IT IS NOT AN EXACT COPY OF THE HARDCOVER VERSION. I have to be clear with this because there is extra content in the hardcover copy, things that aren't completely necessary, but were stuff I needed for class. The paperback is missing a curve ruler paper copy and pattern slopers that are 1/2 and 1/4 scale (and maybe other things as well, but I'm not sure). On top of that, I found a printing mistake in my book, so I couldn't even read a certain portion of my textbook. The instructions on how to measure a body is CONFUSING. It took me 3-4 times to make a sloper that was close to my body measurements, so it's best to find a teacher to help you. Some of the methods of pattern making are also outdated and I have found several typos. Overall, I still like this book, but it can be improved.

Pros:
- covers a wide variety of pattern making clothes (women's, men's, children's, sportswear)
- very inexpensive compared to hardcover version
- pictures are extremely helpful
- includes little tests to further your understanding

Cons:
- NOT AN EXACT COPY OF HARDCOVER VERSION
- typos
- instructions can be unclear
- printing mistake made a page illegible
- some methods outdated
