A Different Approach to Pulse-Taking for Acupuncturists

The recent surge interest in the Extraordinary Vessels make this slim volume a timely introduction to dynamic pulse-taking and an expansion of concepts introduced long ago by Wang Shu-he (see The Pulse Classic published by Blue Poppy). Recent books "An Exposition on the Eight Extraordinary Vessels" by Chace and Shima and "Fabric of the Soul: 8 Extraordinary Vessels" by Hubatch reflect that trend. Fully leveraging the therapeutics of the Extraordinary Vessels requires explorations of the pulse beyond the traditional 28 static pulses. Readers new to the concepts would benefit by first starting their reading on page 24 for the overview of “Directional Pulses and Organ Communication” before plunging into the technical details up front. Cecil-Sterman is said to be working on a much larger exposition on pulses which will hopefully fully complement her book "Advanced Acupuncture: A Clinic Manual."
