Excellent comprehensive intro book for Entertainment-Education scholars

This was a required book for a PhD course in health communication. The authors do an excellent job of bringing together a collection of scholarly articles and chapters on Entertainment-Education (E-E). We get a thorough review of how Miguel Sabido, the "father of E-E" developed the first successful E-E intervention, and the many doors that opened for other researchers in the field. The chapters range from telenovelas in South American countries, to children's animated shows/films, to multi-pronged community interventions in Latino and Hispanic communities in the US. This is a very comprehensive collection of studies and definitely a necessity for anyone that is new to the field of Entertainment-Education.

An excellent resource

This book on entertainment education (EE), "the process of purposely designing and implementing a media message to both entertain and educate" (p. 5) is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the deliberate use of communication to promote social change. The strength of the book, in my opinion, is that it has chapters authored by many of the "heavy hitters" in the field of communication for social change (more generally) and entertainment education (more specifically). There are chapters by theorists, practitioners and individuals who might be considered a mix of these ("practitioner scholars"), like Miguel Sabido, who is often credited with designing the first pro-social "tele-novelas." Renowned social scientist Everett Rogers (author of "Diffusion of Innovations") writes about EE employed to raise awareness about breast cancer in the U.S. Dutch scholar Martine Bouman has important "lessons learned" to offer on the use of EE in the Netherlands. Canadian psychologist Albert Bandura helpfully summarizes his "Social Cognitive Theory," which is widely used and cited in the literature on communication for social change. Anyone who has ever wanted to learn about entertainment education, or who is interested in learning about how entertaining media have been harnessed, internationally, to promote a wide range of social change interventions, would find reading this book rewarding. In a sense, the book IS entertainment education - because it teaches a wide range of theories, illustrated with practical examples, in an entertaining way. If one must study theory, what better way to do it than while learning about a wide-range of interesting international projects? I discovered this book in a class with Dr. Singhal (one of the authors) and have used it and cited it many times in my own academic work. A final thing that appealed to me greatly is the fact that the book contains a lot of stories, examples and photos. I wish more academic books would follow this lead...

Singhal has done some of the finest work every not only documenting but explaining the success of a powerful behavioral intervention--entertainment education. This highly readable and informative book should be required reading for every public policy and Non Profit leader in the world. If it were, the quality of their work would substantially improve.

Best single-volume, cultural history of ANY state

Wow. If only every state had the resources of such a gifted historian!

Dr. Andrew Cayton, Distinguished Professor of History at Miami University of Ohio, is in familiar territory with this book. He is a well-known, perhaps the best-known, scholar of the early history of what was once called the Northwest Territory. Ohio is a state born in the Connecticut Western Reserve, but eventually carved out from the Northwest Territory by an exceptionally diverse group of people, from native Americans to African-Americans, from French to Germans, from American frontiersmen to American land speculators, from New Englanders to Virginians.

This book tells the history of the great State of Ohio as a great mixing bowl of cultures and desires. It is essentially a cultural and institutional history, and reminds me very much of Kevin Starr's great California histories. The narrative skill of the author is profound, so the book is not crowded with illustrations and maps: They simply aren't necessary. This author is skilled enough to tell you without needing to SHOW you.

Ohio was (and is) a destination for a great many unrealized dreams, carried on the shoulders and in the minds of the people who moved there. The story is told here chronologically, sprinkled with biography and a touch of personal nostalgia, that comes together at the end to portray a lasting and engaging image of what Ohio and its people are today.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a fleeting interest in the history of Ohio, and also for students and enthusiasts of American Studies. Dr. Cayton has produced a book that speaks to us all, Buckeye or not.

Solid book that relates well to middle school curriculum

This book was a required read for an Ohio History class. I found that the timeline of the book followed well with that of a middle school Ohio history curriculum. This book could be used by teachers to glean additional insights beyond their class textbooks.

I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the culture and history of Ohioans.

Quite Well Done

Cayton does a splendid job of tracking the development of Ohio and Ohioans and, very much to his credit, he exhibits a wide range of personal profiles rather than just rehash the notables like astronauts and Presidents. Also to his credit he brings to light the nature of the times with greater candor and less "political correctness" than many academic authors these days, and that proves of immense interest.
He even - at the very last of the book - finally reveals the true character of Ohioans, past and present - but I won't spoil it for you. It's both a light, and an enlightening, read. Enjoy.

In typical John DiLeo fashion, this essay gives a clear and balanced evaluation of this movie with bits of humor thrown in as well. DilLeo succeeds in giving me a taste of this film, which I was not familiar with, and tempts me to take a look at it, something i probably would not have done before reading his piece. He is measured and realistic in his praise of the film's strengths as well as it's weaknesses. You can't help but be impressed with his knowledge of the period and genre and of the actors' work.

John DiLeo has a genius for guiding film fans towards forgotten, but excellent, films from Hollywood's Golden Age. And THE SEVENTH CROSS is definitely worth a look! Sterling cast, taut, suspenseful script, with an ending that will haunt you long past fadeout. And John's take, as always, is illuminating, incisive, and extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended!!

Another fine John DiLeo review, cross my heart

It's not easy to write a good, much less great movie review but John DiLeo does it time after time after time. His critique of THE SEVENTH CROSS was especially interesting to me because I not only think the film has Spencer Tracy's best dramatic performance (with the possible exception of his work in TEST PILOT) but because I really think CROSS itself is one of the great unsung World War II dramas, fascinating without ever becoming didactic (which hampered most World War II war dramas). One of the best things about DiLeo's reviews is that, as it is with the marvelous Danny Peary of GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC fame, DiLeo makes you want to see the films he writes about. Even when I disagree with him (as in his review of 7TH CROSS; I, unlike him, don't think Agnes Moorehead overdoes it--it's more that her burst of energy seems overdone in this very understated film) I'm always swept along by his intelligent prose, knowledge of film and grammatical accuracy. (I'm a grammar snob.) In closing, see the movie and read more DiLeo reviews. You'll be glad you did both.

Fan artbook of Megurine Luka!

This one features Megurine Luka, the third Vocaloid. Unlike the earlier mascots, her costume's not based on a school uniform. You'll see some instruments on her, like woodwind and brass.

This is actually a fan artbook so you'll see how fans redesigned her. The overall style is Japanese-like and you'll see shades of pink that are taken from her long hair. The illustrations are beautiful and well done.

I love Miku just as much as I love Luka

Being a great fan of the vocaloid series i first got the CV1 and loved it so much i just needed to get the other volume. finally after getting the money i was able to purchase this beauty and was just as please as the CV1, though the illustration for Miku had more variaty and more artis i still felt Luka did justice and was more than worth it. for any of you who are getting into the Vocaloid series, this is a good book to have as reference as much as entertaiment.
