Money, markets and manipulators

A well written tale of greed and power. Entirely believable with lots of twists and turns, this book shows that financial markets are only as stable as the people that manipulate them..... a gripping story that sweeps across continents from the heart of London to the slums of Brazil. Greed, money, banking, a love interest and eventually following your convictions, what an entertaining read.

Money and Power

Nick, a former Russian studies professor, takes on a job in the high world of finance, despite no background or previous job experience in the bonds and trading industry, but his buddy Jamie works for Dekker and manages to get him an interview. After going through several staff, Nick ends up in a room with Ricardo aka the Marketmaker. The firm specializes mainly in trading of bonds in South America. A couple of days after joining the firm Nick is sent with Isabel to Brazil where she's working on a deal to get infrastructure to the favelas, basically hovels or tent cities. Never really clarified what the financial benefit is to the firm, but they go to Rio only to discover that a competitor has edged Dekker out of the favela deal. Ricardo flies to Brazil and after speaking to the media manages to kill the deal all together. On a subsequent trip Nick and Isabel are kidnapped but he manages to escape. The rest of the novel is spent mainly trying to negotiate Isabel's release and a lot of back room financial deals.

The novel started out slow. The perfect type of novel to read at bedtime when it only takes a couple of pages to fall asleep. After the action started in Brazil the novel picked up and moved along at a good pace and was hard to put down. The novel was written in the first person, and Nick the narrator, was not the Marketmaker. It was just a bad title choice. The book was well written, a good plot, lots of intrigue, good dialogue, and strong characters all helped move the book along. Even though it just wasn't my kind of book, it's still worth 5 stars.

Aren't books about bond trading supposed to be stuffy and boring? Not this story!

An honest man trading bonds? Ha! Haven't had this much fun since reading "Liar's Poker" by Michael Lewis. I recall Mr Lewis stating how disappointed he was when young MBA's asked how to "get into the game" after reading his book. He meant it as a cautionary tale. Oh well, I digress: read "Liar's Poker" and enjoy!
Our intrepid young Russian Lit scholar is broke and needs a job in a hurry. The boss hires this young genius not realizing he is an honest man. Oh the troubles our young scholar encounters, but I will not give away the plot. This is a fun story about high finance and more than a few shenanigans. If this were a movie I would rate it PG-13.

**Description**

This is the eighth edition of a comprehensive book for family physicians, particularly those preparing for their certification examinations. The previous edition was published in 2007.

**Purpose**

It is designed to cover the topics frequently encountered in the clinical practice of family medicine. All of the contributors are family physicians.

**Features**

It covers all the concepts of family medicine very well, from the opening chapters that define what family physicians are and their role in the health of the entire family by describing the concept of the patient-centered medical home, preventative care, care of the elderly and dying patient, and understanding and applying evidence-based medicine. The book is then broken into common diagnoses with chapters on infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine, etc. There are extensive tables, key points, and full-color figures. There is an access key to a full-text web-based version that is very easy to navigate with excellent graphics. As noted in the book, the reference list is on the website, not in the print version.

This is an extremely well-written, well-produced book and a necessary addition to one’s personal professional library.

A clear and concise biography.

Yamamoto was regarded as one of Japan’s most able pre-WW2 naval officers who rose to become Naval Vice Minister prior to returning to those sea-going duties which saw him in command of Japan’s fleets when that war commenced.

Widely regarded as the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbour, from this exceedingly well researched book, we learn that the very idea of such an attack originated many years earlier. During 1927-8 Lieutenant Commander Ryunosuke Kusaka worked simultaneously as an instructor at the naval staff college and the aviation corps. His expertise was aerial tactics and he devised a training scenario which included an attack on Hawaii. He then went on to inject this “theory” into successive students - pilots and future staff officers, over that time. By 1940, therefore, the very idea of such an attack was firmly entrenched in to the minds of all those officers.

Defensive and attack scenarios are a basic part of the teachings of all armed forces. Japan’s senior naval staff had devised a training plan whereby Japan would attack the Philippines in the full expectation that the US Fleet would come the aid of that country whereupon the Japanese Fleet would then destroy the US Fleet at sea. When one officer attending such a training session asked “what do we do if the US fails to respond as expected?”, the official reply revealed an expectation of all Japanese officers to conform to the accepted thinking of their seniors!

This book reveals Japan’s pre-war tactical training as mostly wishful thinking and based on enemy forces doing exactly as was pre-determined by those in charge of strategic planning. In reality, all military plans are changed just as soon as the first shot is fired.

Doubtless, had he survived the war, Yamamoto would have faced a war crimes tribunal. Instead, he lost his life during a conflict which, albeit not of his making, was one in which he went on to play a major role. This book is about this senior Japanese officer from WW2. It is written by a Japanese who clearly understands his subject better than most - perhaps in a way that only a Japanese could. Consequently, we have as complete a biography as one might hope to find.

An anachronism

This book is a bizarre stylistic jumble. The plot reads like something out of the Harlequin Presents line- like "The Greek Billionaire Prince's Captive Nanny Virgin Love Slave Bride". The set-up is there- the heroine is a nice girl who is trying to get rid of her lying husband, and the lead is a French rich guy. He thinks she's a golddigging tramp having an affair with his brother and recovering from a really horrendous divorce. He acts like he hates her and spends most of the book seeming to punish her for the fact that he finds her attractive. Standard Harlequin Presents rot (no offense to those who like that style of book, but when I read them I mainly want to see the heroine deck that guy, because what woman in her right mind would let a guy get away with that? I don't care how fine and rich you are, if you're a jerk you can keep it moving. They never have anything approaching a sense of humor, and I just find them... degrading. Basically, it is not in any way my fantasy).

The stylistic mash comes because this is the Harlequin ROMANCE line. The male lead keeps on acting like an ass, but he really never does anything that bad. I mean he's a jerk, but compared to the standard of behavior in these kinds of books it's really not that bad. He keeps on apologising to her for acting poorly, and she keeps on reacting strongly to his 'abuse' but there really isn't any. It's as if the author had to tone it down to keep in line with the standards of this kind of series romance. It was just... weird.

Ultimately it just doesn't work. It was... kind of boring. The characters had no sense of humor, and lacked the pure melodrama to make up for it.

A CUTTING EDGE CMOS VOLUME!!

Are you a professional or student that works with complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOSs)? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Rasoul Dehghani, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides important details and design methodologies for different architectures of single-ended op amps.

Author Dehghani, begins by introducing the main op amp parameters that a have significant impact on the behavior of an analog system where an op amp has been exploited. Next, the author briefly describes the main sequence of steps that are followed in the fabrication of an MOS transistor. Then, he first analyzes a source-coupled circuit as a differential voltage-to-current converter and then deals with the CMOS differential amplifier in which a current mirror circuit is employed as an active load for the source-coupled pair. In addition, the author deals with the analysis and design of several op amps, including two-stage, telescope cascode and a particular configuration of it known as folded-cascode, and current mirror structure. He continues by outlining the remarkable advantages of fully differential op amps compared to their single-ended alternative. The author then discusses the different structures that are usually used as the output stage of an op amp. Finally, the author analyzes several special architectures of CMOS voltage and current reference circuits.

New Age CRAZYLOCO!

I had no preconceptions on this book, or the author, having heard of neither before picking up this title through the Amazon Vine program. Perhaps if I had read the oft mentioned original "Rain of Gold" my understanding would be different; frankly I doubt it.

However, I am very familiar with the works of Carlos Castaneda. A comparison of Castaneda's body of work and "Beyond Rain of Gold" is overreaching to say the least. Based on this book (admittedly the only one I have read by Sr. Villasenor), he is likewise far from ranking with the "best of John Steinbeck".

It took me several days to get through Chapter One, rambling through sound-bites of dialog and description. But I forged ahead. And things did get better. The mix of family history and the struggles of a writer trying to save the integrity of his work was interesting, and a fast read. It was not even a stretch to see the spiritual side of Villasenor's quest to publish "Rain of Gold", and the different turns that face anyone in a life-changing situation. When faith is tested and emotions are strained to the limit, we often see sides of ourselves, even of reality, that we did not think existed. I was reminded of "Celestine Prophecy", with perhaps a touch of "Bless Me, Ultima". I couldn't wait for Villasenor to bring it home.

Sadly, it was not to be. In the final section of the book, it appears as though Villasenor steps out of reality altogether. The final section of the book takes us down the rabbit hole, but there is no light in this tunnel. Castaneda, even in his most dissociative moments, was at least coherent. The spirit of Villasenor's father no longer speaks to him, which is not surprising. Early in the book Villasenor recounts more than once how his father told him the key to a happy marriage was conversation; he even tells how he and his own wife would spend hours talking. By the end he is screaming at her "NO MORE WORDS!" He begins to repeat the same phrases, and his use of ALL CAPS to denote emotion is just annoying by now; it all comes off as a series of badly written e-mails from "Hell ... I mean Heaven". I was actually waiting for him to tell how he had finally been admitted to a psychiatric ward after his breakdown.

Whatever may be said for any of Villasenor's previous works, "Beyond Rain of Gold" did not inspire me to investigate them. Vaguely spiritual, and only remotely indigenous, this book simply can't take the strain of reaching for the stars, and ends up being crushed by them.

Oh Victor, What happened?

Rain of Gold is truly a master work. I bought copies for myself and friends, gave them away and had to buy more. It will remain one of my favorite books. When I read in the newspaper that a new work was coming out, "Beyond Rain of Gold," I immediately ordered it. I was excited about the new spirituality edge it supposedly had. Gosh, what a disappointment! The first part was readable and I got through the caps with his explanation. But the endless repetitions and creative spelling... It's as if he didn't trust the reader to make his own connections but had to lead us at the kindergarten level. He told a reviewer that he had finally found a publisher who would let him write the book the way he wanted it. Big mistake. This should have remained a personal diary. With all this being said, I did read the whole book. I was with him and his idea of familia right up until he left Barbara alone and terrified up on a rock. This is familia??
The spirits said to leave her there?? The episode left a bitter taste in my mouth. From that point on he took on the characteristics of an egotistical artist who paints his own conception of the world and expects others to live in it. I'll pass. I sent my copy of the book to the paperback swap this morning.

Carlos Castaneda meets Dan Millman meets Lewis Carroll

...with none of the entertaiment or wonder of any of the three.

I'm not sure what I expected from this book, but I can guarantee it wasn't what I ended up with. The book feels like it was written as an obligation to a publisher...to fill a contractural quota of some sort. The book rambles and speaks but says absolutely nothing. Had this book not been free through the Vine Program, I believe I would have been angry with myself for having spent money on it. Everyone I've read says Vilasenor's first book was the greatest thing since flush toilets and sliced bread...and that may be so. However, it might have been better all around if he'd done the one book and moved on to another career. Sorry, Victor....just ain't "feelin'" it this time around. If you want to write self-help books, fine. If you want to write sci-fi/fantasy, fine...but please don't try to combine the two.

Needs a new editor

I find it very difficult to give this anything other than 5 stars, as I have found all of Zed's work to be immensely helpful. This book, taken with the beta website and the companion videos, is probably one of the best and quickest crash courses in C available. This book is the quick-and-dirty, yet somehow very clean, way to get you programming in C in an expedited fashion.

However, the one glaring problem with this book is the editing. There are exercises in the book where the program examples have been updated from the beta website, yet the program output examples have been left the same. Added on top of that, some parts of the text will talk about the book version of the program, while others will reference the website version. It's as if whoever was responsible for editing the book got halfway through and then decided to take an early vacation.

I was able to get through with very little problem because I had already used the website extensively before purchasing the book, but I can imagine that this would pose some difficulty for someone new to the language. This urgently needs a reediting and a second edition to iron out the flaws.

Despite the three stars, I still strongly recommend this book, but only when taken along with the videos and the beta website, and only if the reader is willing to take the extra time to go back and forth between the three. I would only ask Zed to take another pass at making the the solid, standalone, programming book that it obviously has the potential to be.

Good exercises, poor explanations

First, a disclosure: I was mailed a free copy of this book by the publisher.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. As a bit of background on me, I am a CS student who worked through most of K.N. King's "C Programming: A Modern Approach" last year as my formal introduction to both C and programming in general. So I'm not a total beginner at C, but I'm certainly not an expert, by any means.

Let me start with the good points about this book:

+ You will be exposed to a lot of code. And not just "textbook" code where everything is reduced and condensed to show off some facet of programming (e.g. "class Cat extends Animal"), but real code, the kind of thing you might see in an actual C project on Github. You will have to work through the code and understand what it does with relatively little handholding.

+ You will be exposed to a lot of data structures. Linked lists of several varieties, databases, structures, search trees, hash maps, and more are all used in various exercises.

+ You will gain insight from a very experienced programmer--the author! It's clear from reading this book that Zed Shaw has a lot of experience writing C professionally. He has a lot of pointers (heh) on writing code.

+ The videos are very good. There's an included DVD with lectures related to each exercise. They add a lot to the value of the book.

+ You will be exposed to other useful ideas: testing, defensive programming, etc. These are useful no matter what language you're writing in.

Now, the bad points:

- Poor copy editing. One example: in the writeup of exercise 17, in the "how to break it" section Zed writes, "For example, remove the check on line 160..." In the code, line 160 is a blank line.

- Vague, incomplete, or totally missing explanations. This was the worst part of the book in my opinion. If you're the kind of person who likes to more or less completely understand how some feature or mechanism of a programming language works before using it yourself, you may find this book frustrating. I was often referring back to K.N. King's book to review things that Zed Shaw was introducing in his code and then explaining in one or two sentences, if at all. Sometimes I was reading entire chapters of K.N. King's book before being able to dive back in to Learn C the Hard Way. You may often finding yourself searching online for definitions of standard library or other functions to get an idea of how they're fitting into the code examples. Which makes me wonder, if I have to read another textbook to understand Learn C the Hard Way, why don't I just stick with that other textbook?

Here's one example off the top of my head. Mr. Shaw says of the "register" keyword: "Forces the compiler to keep this variable in a register, and the compiler can just ignore you." Isn't that self-contradictory? How can the compiler ignore something it is "forced" to do? K.N. King's explanation was longer but much more explanatory, including the sentence: "Specifying the storage class of a variable to be register is a request, not a command. The compiler is free to store a register variable in memory if it chooses." Mr. Shaw's use of the word "force" is misleading and sloppy, and his explanation confused more than clarified.

If the example code in the exercises had had a few more pages of explanation each, I could probably have really enjoyed this book. As it is, I found it tedious, as I was spending most of my time with other sources just to understand what was written. For most concepts, I couldn't understand Mr. Shaw's super terse explanations until I had already understood some other source's explanations of that concept.

So, would I recommend this book? Well, it depends. If you don't anything about C, then I'd suggest K.N. King's C book, which is much more thorough and precise with explanations. If you have already studied C, then this might be useful as a review.

[resolved] Missing important accompanying material.

Interesting concept. I am a big fan of Zed Shaw's Learn Python the Hard Way. It's a great method that fits well with how I like to learn.

So I purchased the Kindle version of the "Learn C the Hard Way". But right of the start the author emphasises the importance of "accompanying videos" which are integral to the book, and they are nowhere to be found.

There is a section in later chapters of the book with a procedure on how to get the videos but after registering and following the procedure on the Informit website the book links to, I did not get a download link.

I opened a support ticket with Informit and 2 days later got a response with a suggestion I contact Amazon. Pretty poor experience if you ask me.

I just needed a quick refresher since I hadn't used C in some years, so I opted for a different book instead due to the issues of missing accompanying material of this book.

EDIT**: The curse of the "early adopter" strikes back! Read the comment bellow this review. It's from the editor herself. They remedied the issue and now I'm a happy camper! Highly recommend this book. Zed Shaw's method is unique and a very fun way to learn.

A fundamental introductory guidebook

The book starts by giving the fundamental rundown on all the major points in process development and then moves on to about twenty worked examples taken from industry. Reversion to the Mean

In Predicting the Markets of Tomorrow author James O'Shaughnessy offers his ideas on the investment environment we are likely to encounter over the 20 years from 2006 through 2026. He selected twenty years as this time horizon based on extensive analysis of market behavior over approximately the last 200 years. His logic goes something like this:

1. When calculating returns from any investment strategy, it is essential to focus on the real return, after accounting for inflation.

2. Approximately two hundred years of stock market data (1809-2004) show that real returns have been highly erratic, especially when analyzed over periods of a few years or less.

3. However, when one calculates returns using overlapping periods of 20 years, they become much smoother. Stocks have rarely lost value over a 20 year period.

4. There are probably some underlying factors that cause returns to be smoother over 20 years. O'Shaughnessy suggests two. First, many investors don't really get started saving and investing until their mid 40s, giving than about 20 years to accumulate assets before retiring. Second, retirement at 65 together with a life expectancy of 85 suggests retirements (and asset depletion cycles) that last about 20 years.

5. If one decomposes the 20 year average returns of the S&P into the returns of the growth and the value stocks that comprise the S&P, these two groups have tended to move out of cycle with each other. Growth stocks occasionally have produced the higher return, as they did in the 1980s and 1990s. More often, value stocks have outperformed value stocks.

6. The returns of these three groups (S&P, Growth, and Value) all seem to revert to their mean rates of return. Any group that has outperformed in a 20 year interval is likely to underperform in the next 20 year period.

7. Since growth stocks outperformed in the 1980s and 90s, it's now their turn to underperform while value stocks outperform.

8. One can also segment the market by the capitalization (the total value of all the shares of a company). This analysis suggests that small cap stocks are likely to outperform large cap stocks over the next 20 years.

9. The average 20 year real returns /standard deviations of the key market groups between 1947 and 2004 have been:

Large Cap Growth: 6.26% / 3.83%

S&P 500: 7.30% / 3.76%

Large Cap Value: 10.32% / 3.42%

Small Cap: 10.42% / 2.94%

10. As seen in the figures above, Large Cap Value and Small Cap stocks have higher returns with lower standard deviations. When you add on the fact that these two groups have underperformed over the last 20 years, O'Shaughnessy appears to have a compelling argument for focusing on these two groups. To hedge his bets slightly, he recommends a preferred portfolio allocation of 50% large cap value, 35% small cap growth, and 15% large cap growth.

11. Fixed income securities, even inflation protected treasuries (TIPS) are currently producing returns that, at best, break even. They are "Return-free risks, not risk-free returns". Avoid them except as a place to park cash they you will need in the next few years.

Reviewer's Comments: I agree with O'Shaughnessy's approach and conclusions but would have liked a better justification for using 20 year average returns. One could argue that generations are separated by about 25 years which might make that figure the logical interval for averaging. Perhaps someone has (or should) compare the results of averaging over different periods such as 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. Or, even better, use a Fast Fourier Transform to determine the power spectral density of each time series.

I admit it -- I'm a geek

I love having numbers to back things up. I do. O'Shaugnessy delivers in spades. His opinions include some guesswork, but also thousands and thousands of checked inflation-adjusted returns from decades of the stock market, graphed nicely, so I can check his work and come to my own conclusions. I can imagine no better book on technical investing for me.

He also has good quick summaries of his findings at the end of each chapter and in the introduction, for the rest of you :-)

Excellent and clear research

I have read many investment books -- this is one of the best. It offers clear guidance and solid research to back up the predictions and claims. The claim that small-cap value stocks will outperform all the rest is backed by careful historical analysis and testing. I especially like the fact that the research done is for an appropriate time frame for those of us worried about retirement -- 20 years, and that "real returns" -- inflation-adjusted returns -- are used, instead of nominal returns that are most often cited by books and websites. The only hesitation I have in following the advice in this book is to invest in 10 large cap value stocks -- one of them, like GM, can easily go bankrupt and wipe out 10% of the portfolio value. I personally would stick to ETF, unless I have enough capital to hold at least 25 stocks in my portfolio. All in all, good, clear, and simple investment advice with serious research.
