9800 Savage Road: A Novel of the National Security Agency, by M. E. Harrigan

December, 2000: In a tiny office in the basement of the National Security Agency, a handful of analysts work on a project so secret its existence is known to fewer than a hundred people. They are intercepting Osama bin Laden's every word as he talks on his satellite phone to al Qaeda cells. What he's planning is big—a strike against the U.S.—and they know from the intercepts they'll learn the details any day… any minute. Suddenly, the conversations stop.

A Senior Executive is murdered inside the NSA complex, the first in a series of disasters inflicted from both inside and outside the carefully concealed house of spies. Alexandra O'Malley, consummate Intelligence Analyst, must sort through the clues and scramble to stop the escalating crises… but to succeed, she'll have to break all the rules.

In 9800 Savage Road, reality and fiction intersect in a terrifying story of the events leading up to 9/11 from deep within the cloistered walls of NSA. M. E. Harrigan delivers the first insider's perspective in NSA's history. She shreds the thick veil of secrecy and explores the thoughts and actions, the dedication and bureaucratic infighting, and the occasional scandals of the hidden workforce. It's a story of betrayal and treachery, courage and loyalty… so real you'll wonder how much is true.

From Publishers Weekly
Harrigan, who spent 27 years at the National Security Agency, brings plenty of insider knowledge but little originality to her clunky debut, a thriller set in late 2000. Alexandra O'Malley, an NSA assistant director, is part of Project Meridian, a program that's been monitoring a particularly worrisome stream of phone calls placed by terrorist Usama bin Laden (UBL) originating from al-Qaeda headquarters in Afghanistan. The calls concern a major upcoming mission against America, but the phone intercepts cease before hard facts are ascertained. Alex's boyfriend, CIA agent Gabriel Ayala, parachutes into Afghanistan to tap into the terrorists' telephone system. After several murders occur involving NSA personnel, Alex takes it upon herself to solve these crimes. Harrigan gives readers an authentic peek behind the curtains of the secretive NSA, but it comes at the expense of a compelling plot or interesting, in-depth characters. (Sept.)

“ Captures the commitment and dedication of agency analysts beautifully and makes the reader wonder—could this really happen?”

9800 Savage Road gives you a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of the nation’s premier—and most secretive—intelligence-gathering agency. Harrigan’s fascinating novel puts you in the middle of the cloistered world of electronic spying few people ever experience. A must read.”—Bill Gertz, national security reporter for

The Washington Timesand author of

The Failure Factory

“ A very rare eye-opening peek into the ultra-secret world of the National Security Agency…. Harrigan has distilled her twenty-seven years with the NSA into a powerful novel of suspense that could only have been written by an insider. Some of the fun of this novel is trying to guess what words the NSA blacklined before publication. A truly intriguing and thought-provoking look behind the scenes in the war on terror.”

—Nelson DeMille, #1

9800 Savage Road
By mike katoktin
9800 SAVAGE ROAD starts out a little awkward, like the first time I drove a manual transmission. IT'S WORTH STICKING WITH because it offers an intriguing, plausible explanation as to why Bin Ladin's minions could not be deterred before 911, and who was the main target of the subsequent anthrax attacks. Folks who want a peek behind the scenes will love it. Harrigan takes an ill advised poke at the FBI who would undoubtedly know that people generally do not commit suicide naked. However, readers can chalk that up to competitive mind sets among U.S. alpha sleuths. That aside, the work reads like good thrillers should. Faster page turning until you cannot wait to learn the ending. It's a great read for her first time up to bat. I give her all four bright and shining stars.

NSA Exposed
By Larry M. Herman
I feel the beginning was a little tedious as the author goes on to explain some of the workings and titles of people who run the NSA. Fact or fiction I am not sure if we need to know they use alphabet speak for DIRNSA or SIGINT, etc. There was some time spent on character development whose character never played an integral part of the story. Once the plot started to unfold the story read very quickly. Although we know the outcome and the culmination of September 11, 2001, could this happen? We will never know, but who would have believed a terrorist massacre could occur at Fort Hood, TX. Fact or fiction or a superb blend, 9800 Savage Road is a good read.

No Such Agency
By Gary D. Clark
I am not a particularly avid reader, but I could not put this book down. I am very interested in non-fiction espionage, and despite the NSA's assertion they do not exist (NSA = NO SUCH AGENCY)I found it rather intriguing this is the first published book by a former employee. It is a thriller from cover to cover. Grips you at the start and leaves you "can't waiting" for the next chapter. I can't wait for the movie. Its right up there with Marathon Man. Gary Clark
